When you have the best player on the floor every night you are always in the game. The supporting cast has to figure out their roles to translate that advantage into W's.

Maybe the coach needs to figure out the roles of the supporting cast, seems like he has always liked one man offense, but Crawford is a nice HS player. It was a great HS game, the largest attendance of a regular season game that I have attended in years.

No, I left pretty quickly.

 

That was one heck of a game & an electric atmosphere. Both crowds were fired up, and it really had a District Tournament feel.

 

I'll bet there were 30-35 lead changes in this one, with a great deal of them coming in the first half. It was just back and forth the whole half, until Bracken took a 3 point lead to the locker room. Augusta was strong in the 3rd & 4th quarters. I believe they had a 10 point lead at one time, but missed free throws, coupled with Austin Crawford getting to the basket at will, helped the Polar Bears get back into it. Free throws are the primary reason, IMO, that Augusta didn't win this in regulation.

 

First OT was back and forth, but it appeared that Bracken County was going to get out with the W, up 83-80 and just about ten seconds or so to play. That's when Connor Maddox hit a very challenged 3-pointer to send it to Double OT.

 

Double OT was also back and forth, but Augusta was able to make more plays and come away with a really hard fought win.

 

I liked a lot of what I saw from both teams. Augusta's big 3 were solid, as was Jared Shoemaker. He has really improved from last year to this.

 

Obviously, Crawford was outstanding, but I really liked what I saw out of John Bravard. Kid had a very good game. Brady Jones and Jacob Hamilton also played well for the Polar Bears.

 

Just a great game and effort by both teams. If you were in attendance, you got more than your money's worth. Great job to both squads. :thumb:

I think Bracken has proved in the first week of the season they can play with anyone in the 10th. Just need to sure up a few things and the wins will come.

Connor Maddox led Augusta with 29 points. Camryn Snapp had 28 & 10. Jared Shoemaker 21 points. Owens Crawford 7 points & 10 assists.

It wasn't really deep, but it was pretty well defended. He just made a very tough shot.

I had it deeper than that, maybe 30. The thing that was so special is that everyone in the gym knew Augusta's only hope at that time was a 3. #20(Engnes) had done a great job of blanketing Maddox all night, denying him open looks. At this point Maddox was one for two from 3, with only one open look. He received the ball with no open space (not sure if it was Engnes or Crawford swarming him). He released before the defender could respond and hit nothing but the bottom of the net. It was an OMG moment for everyone in the gym.

It was a great shot from my angle looked like around where the college line would be maybe a touch behind. All that matters is it went in and was the momentum shift the panthers needed. I thought we had the win up to that point. Austin fouling out was also huge.

No question Austin was best player on the floor. Having watched him for two years, I know he can shoot outside the paint. However, for the life of me, I only recall him taking one shot last night longer than 7-8 ft. range which was the three he hit in the 2nd qtr. To my point, the kid penetrated at will and has a soft touch around the rim. He didn't need to shoot anything outside and he chose the sure penetration and score. Smart player in Round 1.

 

IMO Round 2, whenever that is, will be a tough task for both teams. Basketball fans should mark this game as a must see! Augusta's seniors will have more time under new coach, while best player in region under arguably best coach (Hinson) will be playing better with an anticipated superior team game. Both of these teams could be 10th Regional threats. Shame District doesn't seed to better the chances that the two best teams advance. It is early in the season, but Mason might be #3?
