Very interesting thread! Was Joe Franck awarded a spot this year as an Official in Bowling Green? I thought I saw he did one of the games.

 

Of course he did, he did the 5A game. This season was his fair well tour after putting in 40 years of officiating.

And for the record I'm not complaining about the Dead Ball Foul. It's a judgement call and could go either way. In this case, it was the other way. It's the way the ball was spotted!

Yes it was but it wasn't a Varsity game and it was a Varsity Referee. The fact that it happened against the Birds is not the point I'm trying to make and it shouldn't make a difference. The penalty that was called was a Judgement call by the Ref and I'm not disputing that. If the Highlands player would of just kept his mouth shut this would be a mute point. They would of ended up scoring and won the game. Period! The thread was started to point out that there is way too many politics involved in who gets to call the Finals each year. So since you chimed in I will ask you the same question. Would you want an Official that blows a easy call(ruling) in a Freshman game with "game on the line" implications calling a State Final? Yes or No???

This is not just a State Finals issue. The officiating needs to be addressed for regular season and the playoffs as well. Some of these crews are just awful. I don't care if someone wants to play up the "they are doing it for the kids" card. If they are bad, get rid of them. And no, I have no desire to "get out there and do a better job" myself. I make no claim that I could do a better job. Very likely, I could not. Which is why I, unlike others, don't run out there and pretend that I can.

This is why I commented on this thread and pointed out the very untimely penalties and miscues with the ones I witnessed. With the NCC muffed punt thread and now this one questioning the Politics involved with Officiating across the State and who should be entitled to call a State Championship game.

 

So with that I want to ask Clizzy a Yes/No question since he joined in with me on my little rant.

 

Would you want the Official that blew a easy spot foul that Ultimately put the Driving Offensive team in a hole and changed their Offensive strategy all together with less than 2 minutes to play? Would you want the same Official(s) calling a State Final game where the Stakes are at a all Season high? I know I wouldn't....How about you Clizzy? It's yes or no.....

 

I can't give you a simple yes/no. It would certainly give me pause but all officials make mistakes.

 

If I had two even officials and one hadn't made an egregious error like this then I could use this as the tie-breaker.

I predict that within 5-10 years you will see high school varsity football being played on two different week nights due to the lack of officials. Who in their right mind would do that job for that pay. Why is it that there are more people retiring from officiating than new officials coming in? My guess is that it has a whole lot more to do with then just the money.

It's a continuing challenge. I'm one of those "crazy" folks that call games and thoroughly enjoy it even with all of the things that people perceive as reasons not to do it. I get it. It's not for everyone.

 

Schools may be forced to pay more though in order to keep people from bailing.

I should add that my gut feel is that football is the least problematic when it comes to negatives people associate with officiating. Not close to the fans. 22 players so it makes it difficult for fans to see everything. You have about 5 partners.

 

In baseball people are sometimes 10 feet away. At most you have 1 partner and often you have none and man, woman, and child grew up playing or watching the game so they "KNOW" the rules and what you get wrong.

If you get rid of what you have available, and you have none to backfill, what is your solution ? (since you have obviously indicated you have no desire to officiate)

 

To say that you "don't run out there and pretend that I can" officiate, you are implying that those that are out there are "pretending" rather than trying their best to get it correct.

 

I won't go down the "for the kids" road or any other road for that matter, but I do have one question:
