Pikeville vs. Henry Clay

Featured Replies

Yes...If the current format of all 6 Pike County Schools playing in the Pike County Bowl and playing on Friday and Saturday continues then I hope Pikeville will choose to no longer participate in the Pike County Bowl and start their own bowl game. I don't think Pikeville would have any problem bringing in 3 good teams for a bowl game...of course I would love to see Belfry still in it.

I agree the PCB really hasnt been the same since they let all the county schools participate. Ive said it before, the original idea behind the PCB was to have the best 2 teams in Pike county play the two good teams out in the state.

I retract point two, I must have Pikeville confused with someone else. I thought they were a running team.

Coach J, correct me if I'm wrong, but is the Pikeville offense similiar to the one Trinity saw when playing Oldham county as a district opponent?

Very similar to what Oldham was doing the SECOND year they were in Trinity's district (and that's where LSU was confused...he was undoubtedly thinking of the first year we played them tough at their place running the conventional Wing-T; the second year was a rebuilding year for us so we used that year to install an offense that is probably most like what West Virginia U. is doing right now).

Last year at Pikeville, just as we had at Oldham, we sort of went through the evolution from Wing-T to Shotgun-Spread...but we did it in ONE SEASON as opposed to the seven it took at Oldham.

Incidentally, Coach Simpson at Henry Clay has, I believe, had a similar evolution from conventional, under center, full-house backfield Wing-t to one that works more out of shotgun with fewer backs in tight.

CoachJ,

I think it might have got lost in my post but, I do want you guys to win this game.

Good luck this season.

I think Coach J is doing a great job at Pikeville so far. This is a great game for the pathers to get better in. Henry Clay is better then anything in class A right now. You never now how good you are until you play the best.

Pikeville beat Henry Clay the last two times they played, but it's been a while. It won't happen this time though, although it might be a better game than people think.

Lot better matchups than Henry Clay in the PCB, IMO...

To name a few:

Corbin

Middlesboro

Matewan, WV (multiple state champs)

Bell Co

Rockcastle Co

Breathitt Co

Grundy, VA

Richlands, VA

Gate City, VA (multiple state champs, my personal favorite, would love to see this one)

Bluefield, WV ("The Bluefield Beavers," multiple state champs, Pikeville beat them a few years back when they were ranked #1 in all classes in WV.)

and many more...

This matchup with HC makes no sense for anyone...

And actually I think everyone on my list is a state champion...

The Henry Clay game is a result of last years two year contract in the Pike Co Bowl.

Tough to get one year deal teams these days.

Quite frankly, this is one of the reasons why school's like HC have a hard time competing with Louisville schools come playoff time. They refuse to play a quality opponent like LexCath that might give them some insight as to where they stand. But they will blow-out a 1A team running an offense they will never confront late in the playoffs. Makes no sense to me. Last year prior to the game with Trinity a number of posters noted that HC had killed a number of teams including some lower divison powers implying that it was somehow relevant. Needless to say the Rocks ignored the hype and blew-out HC. I can't figure it out.

This game is the result of a multi-year commitment by Henry Clay to the Pike County Bowl. They do not pick their opponent. Coincidently, Henry Clay must replace their entire offensive line plus their tight end, as well as their quarterback. For those of you who are considering this one an automatic blowout, you must have never been associated with a team who has all new starters in the seven offensive positions closest to the ball.

Henry Clay will be fairly young although extremely talented in the skilled positions. Their best playing will come later in the season as they gain invaluable experience.

In Henry Clay's defense about last season's run, it too was their first year running the newly installed offense. Secondly, I don't think, that when this game is finally over, that Pikeville fans will feel like they've scheduled a better opponent before. The fact that Henry Clay moved their best playmaker in years to safety and he will probably be the fastest player on their schedule, this year and last year's, they may get some good out of this matchup pending their kids keep their heads up.

P.S.- The previous two matchups have absolutely nothing to do with this one. Plus Henry Clay has more room to practice now and a home field. Last season they had much success and played on the road up until the playoffs.

Henry Clay lost Simpson (QB), Johnson (RB), D1 TE (Name?), and their Offensive Line. I think it will be a tough game for Pikeville due to 4A versus 1A numbers, but they may play the Devils a little better than most are predicting!

Yes there have been many better teams than Henry Clay in the Pike County Bowl before.

nmm

I know henry clay lost alot of good kids from last season but they always have alot of talent to work with, so i think they can feel the gaps. In my opinion Chase Minnifield of Henry Clay will give many teams trouble this year.

Don't get me wrong, Henry Clay is the favorite in this one, but GO PANTHERS!:fight: :fight:
