I hope Belfry can have about 3 or 4 of those long 7 minute drives each half and leave LexCath about 2 minutes per half to run their offense.

 

 

Thats almost long enough for the Knights. They average 1.7 points/minute of possesion. They kept oppenents at 0.67 points/minute of possession

The more I see of Ogbogu I honestly think I worry more about the little bubble screen to him even more than the deep ball.

 

That guy is slick! One missed tackle or one time getting caught on a block and he gets a crease....goodnight.

 

Belfry's DE/LB's are going to have to play huge. TJ Dotson and Austin Hall. Both have great speed for HS Linebackers and will be the ones asked to get out on those plays to help as the DB's fight through blocks. They are also going to be asked to drop in coverage a lot and take away the short hitches to the WR's and flares to Jones that LexCath likes to use to move the sticks. They also will have to be able to keep contain on the QB.

 

If Belfry wants to win this game those two are going to have to play big time games.

It's kind of pick your poison on both sides. If Belfry plays up too close on JJ and Donovan they may run right by them vertically. If they drop in zone can they contain Jaylen and Andy?

 

The same can be said about LexCath trying to stop Belfry. With the line man winning on the first level the LB's can't afford to guess on who has the ball. You have to stay home, play disciplined, and make those tackles when you have a chance. And you better hold on until help arrives because the ball carriers don't go down easy. If you sell out in the run game you have to account for the pass, pretty tough task.

 

Keeping your emotions in check is key and no one has brought this up. I think both teams know the other team pretty well. Both teams have ran a lot of these same plays that other teams knew were coming and still couldn't be stopped. The defensive players can't get down on themselves if they give up a huge play or score. I really think that mental part will be huge come Sunday.

I think Watisu summed it up really well. They are polar opposites of one another and each of their strengths plays on the other's weaknesses. It should be a dandy. I really like Belfry' s running game. They have it down to a science. I think Belfry wins in a close one. Go Pirates!

I don't think anyone doesn't recognize that this is the title game for Class 3A..from that point on, the overwhelming opinion is that Belfry is going to do what they usually do-run over their opponent until there's nothing left to run over..perhaps..but in this game, particularly the championship games, both teams get to play, and they will both play both sides of the ball..on paper, its sounds insurmountable to deal with Belfry's running game..maybe as insurmountable as dealing with Catholic's spread offense, and the speed and ability of its' skill position players..I think this game just might come down to the skill, ability and endurance of the defensive units...Belfry has a well known and recognized head coach who has earned his records over many years with a style of play that suits his resources..Catholic has a head coach who, by comparison, is in the early stages of his career, but, who also is gaining a firm grasp on what the game is all about, and is taking full advantage of all the assets available to him...you know, this could just be one of the classic high school football games in Kentucky's history..wouldn't that be an incredible page in their memory banks twenty years from now..just saying...

Wouldn't surprise me to see a another patented 7-6 3A Championship game type of score.... nor would a 42-38 shootout surprise me.

Lexington Catholic has never had a big team. Size has always been something that they lack both defensively and offensively, but they make up for it in technique. The coaching staff does an excellent job of teaching the fundamentals to close the gap that the Knights may lack physically.

 

For as long as I've been a student and fan of the team back in the mid-2000s to now, no matter how much they've been mismatched they've always found a way to compete in games they have no business being in on paper. I don't know if they win on Sunday, but they'll compete and that's all I ask of this group.
