Rajon Rondo to Phoenix #21 Pick

I don't know any particular years, nor do I know of any players (other than Jason Williams & Darius Washington Jr.) who have lost games because of missed free throws. But I assume that there are times in Shaq's career when they have lost by a few points, when Shaq missed more than a "few" free throws.

All I'm asking for is proof it cost them a title.

I would agree it probably cost him a regular season game or two in his career. To make a claim like this though I would like Sticky to do some research. Did a poor free throw shooting game cost them a seed in the playoffs was there a year this would had affected the playoff outcome?

Was their a playoff or finals game when Shaq's free throw shooting cost them.

Except for this year Shaqs 30ppg and 12 boards usually overshadowed free throw shooting in the playoffs.

This whole argument started with me saying I think Free Throw shooting is the easiest thing to fix in a persons basketball game would you agree with that CC?

No rules, it's just if you're going to use Rodman as an example of someone that cares about anything well...that's a bad choice. I truly don't pay that close attention to the NBA. Possibly last year. Didn't he have a horrendous free throw shooting series?

How can a 50% free throw shooter with more than 10 attempts not be a credible argument?

I never have claimed myself to be an NBA expert...

Rodman used to sleep at the gym. He was in better shape than 99% of the people who ever played the game. Remember that 6'10" skinny guy with crazy hair bodying up with a young Shaq. Rodman cared. Rodman cared a lot.

That's impossible and you know it. Just some advice, don't hold your breath on the research.

So he was 5 inches shorter than Shaq and weighed 100 pounds (or more) less. Yet he was the one defender in the league, at the time, that Shaq couldn't push around. I'd say he worked pretty hard and cared quite a bit. Also, you have to care to rebound the way he did. Otherwise he wouldn't have done it, he would have been a defensive specialist (which he was).

I don't know - I doubt it. The problem with FT shooting is often times mental, not mechanics.

It may be easier at an early age, when you can help improve their form; however, when you're working with 20+ year old athletes who are getting paid, I don't think it's the easiest aspect of the game to change. But, I don't know what is.

Just proving you stated something without proof. I have to take it all time, deal. :thumb:

I can what if a million times or could of, doesn't mean anything.

Free and not easy

A look at Shaquille O'Neal's free throw shooting in the Finals and how his teams have fared:

Year O'Neal's pct. Result

1995 57.1% (24-42) Magic lost

2000 38.7% (36-93) Lakers won

2001 51.3% (39-76) Lakers won

2002 66.2% (45-68) Lakers won

2004 49.1% (27-55) Lakers lost

Just for you BS...04 maybe?

Don't ever ask me for research again.

I'd say conditioning would be the "easiest" to fix because anyone can do it with success.

In 04' the Pistons should have swept the Lakers so I'd say it didn't cost them the title.

Saying its more mental proves my point even more. Mental adjustments are much easier than physical. Its hard for me ever to believe a man making 7 figures to play a game, can't improve his free throwing shooting if he didn't want to.

Its a set shot from 15 feet away. I'm out of shape, haven't played in about 2 months, and I'm pretty confident I could pick up a ball and still hit 70% of my free throws. Its the easiest shot or type of scoring in any major sport I can think of. There is no defense in front of you. Its the easiest shot to practice.

Conditiong is more of a broad part of anygame, but if you want to count it I'll give you that. I was thinking along the lines of actual parts of a specfic game.

I never claimed to have proof...:p

Fair enough. :D

There's a difference between shooting a FT in practice and shooting one with pressure, tired, in front of thousands of people.

I think the fact that it's mental makes it much more difficult. When Shaq or Josh Boone nr whomever goes up to the line, they don't expebt to make it anymore. That's obvious, when you see them at the line.
