Going back to 1959, we are looking at the number of regional championships won. In 1959 and 1960, there were no districts, only regions. Starting in 1961 some regions were divided into districts and some were not. It wasn't until 1965 that all regions were divided into two districts each (although AAA-Jefferson County wouldn't be completely divided that way until 1973). Bottom line, just go with me here!

Beechwood didn't win their first until 1974 then didn't win another for about ten years if I remember correctly. Have made up for lost time.

Looking at this list and Friday's results about all you can say is the rich get richer.

Having insomnia and finding nothing on tv I checked some sources to see how rich the "rich" teams were. I acessed "The Kentucky High School Athlete" for December of 1962, 1971 and 1978 and found 153, 188 and 199 respectfully competing for titles. I used Riherds scoreboard for 1998 and 2015 which showed 197 and 218 in district play. Not being crazy enough to look up 57 years to get an average I just rounded it to 200 teams a year to get a general idea.

From 1959 through 1974 there were 3 classes producing 12 regional champs per year for a total of 192. From 1975 through 2006 there were 4 classes producing 16 regional champs per year for a total of 512. From 2007 to present there were 6 classes producing 24 regional champs per year for a total of 216. So this is a total of 920 regional titles to date. After updating the above list with this year's winners I took the 11 teams with 16 or more regional titles and found they have combined for 259 out of a possible 920. This is 28.2% of the regional titles being won by roughly 5.5% of the teams. The other 16 on the list of those with 10 or more have 182 titles which is a 19.8% rate. I combined the 2 and got 27 teams, roughly 13.5%, winning 48% of all regional titles.

It gets crazier when you look at state titles. From 1959 through 2014 there have been 224 titles up for grabs(there have been 225 champs because in the early year there was a tir in AAA). If you take the top 10 teams for total titles(Trinity 23, Highlands 23, St. X 12, Beechwood 11, Mayfield 11, Danville 10, Boyle Co. 7, Male 6, CovCath 6 and Ft. Campbell 6) you find they have won 115 of 224 for a 51.3% rate won by about 5% of the teams competing. It is too cold to go fishing and I'm bored and can't sleep--does it show? I do want to throw a disclaimer out--this is 4 AM math by a guy 7 weeks short of 69 who hasn't slept in 23 hours--draw your own conclussions.

Two final thoughts. The super 10 from my above post have also combined for 35 losses in the finals and five of the ten are still playing this year.
