I suggest anyone who doubts this do a little research on the amount of regulations and red tape a new small business has to go through today compared to even 50 years ago.

I will actually with some of my liberal friends that some of the red tape is warranted to protect the rights of workers for example, but the LEVEL of red tape that small businesses have to deal with is totally out of control.

Not just 'red tape'. There are now laws on the books that conflict with each other for some businesses. For some businesses it is literally - break the law if you do, break the law if you don't. Business are forced to be become scoff laws in order to survive.

Of course there were minimal federal regulations back then. They had no clue what they may or may not be harming when they were innovating. If it weren't for corrupt businessmen and shady practices there wouldn't be a need for red tape now would there?

I do find him hard to follow on economic points. His "big bank" answer last night not only had me confused but also Cavuto.

 

Big bank and TBTF bank issues are very hard to understand. The question was overly simplistic. Carson tried to put reality into the silly question.

 

TBTF banks are just the distribution network to the private Federal Reserve. Since we are all beholding to a single central bank - the FR, it - by definition - is TBTF. Hence, the real reason for TARP in 2008.

 

The TBTF banks have leveraged their special status of the gateway to the Fed and publicly traded stock to gamble for big earnings - to drive up their stock price. But when their gambles fail they then come to government for money - that the Fed prints.

 

The battle of central bank vs. non-central bank has been part of American history. Since 1913 we live in Central Bank world. This impacts our lives more than any politics or policies.

When banks fail peoples money does not just evaporate as implied. Most of it is invested in assets that still have value or can be sold to reclaim the money. This why invididual accounts are 'Federally insured'. This is not so bad for the insurance process since most money can be reclaimed if a 'bank fails'.

 

TBTF protection is not about inviduals bank accounts - its about protecting the centralized bank system.

 

Finally - centralized banking is not synonymous with 'capitalism'. You can have capitalism without the Fed and without TBTF. Non-centralized bank issuing their own money can be confusing inside a single country. But government-issued money can support free-market capitalism as well as central bank issued money. But bad things have happened to Presidents who advocated that approach.

I say if the Republicans want to nominate a guy who holds this period up as a positive economic model, let's let them. Who cares if he leaves out that slavery was a big part of it, or the forced labor of immigrants later, or the complete lack of protection for workers. This will go over much better in the general election.

I would say it's intellectually dishonest to act like because there was evil in a period there was no good. We take things from time period through out world history , which had many evils going on.
