PP92, I want your honesty on this one. If the Mizzou football players were undefeated right now or key players were projected to be drafted high in the NFl would they protest?

 

Also, my next question is for anyone. Does performing a hunger strike really show that someone cares more about racism than any of us? I never got the mindset out of this protest. "Look at him! He has refused to eat! He obviously cares more about racism than I do!". I just don't that concept.

Nope. Not at all. I have openly supported Shaun King and Rachel Dolezal and their work for their beliefs in their causes. I don't see color at all in my personal life but when the Anglo-Saxon overtures on this board take over and discussion comes to a screeching halt then I'll happily throw on my Angry Black Man hat and go for what I know. Honestly, what the #blacklivesmatter movement needs is more white people such as yourself championing the movement to make it legitimate. Nobody believes or cares about it when black people champion it. It's just us complaining about stuff we refuse to fix. That whole black on black violence thing. Chicago. I'm sure you know about all of that though.

 

What is really comical is you thinking you understand blacks and their socioeconomic status. THAT is comical. I love the assumption that because a black graduate student comes from money that he doesn't know the struggle. I love that you think the struggle is about socioeconomic status.

 

If your posts suggested that you understand the black perspective I'd let you champion #blacklivesmatter all you want. Gametime understands the black perspective more than any white person on this board. He gets more upset with you all than I do. I expect this kind of blowback from white people. I've only been hearing it my whole life. That's why I say "it's a black thing. You wouldn't understand." Because you don't. No matter how hard you try. Or are you even trying?

A well thought out response, and I appreciate that, but it seems like there are a few things I should clarify. I am not contending that discrimination against black people, or any race for that matter, exists. It does and it is something that we need to strive to end. Can it be ended, who knows, but it matters that we do what we can to end it.

 

That being said, I do not agree that a person being black inherently gives them a unique understanding of a struggle that they may never face. You used the example that black people get eyeballed when walking into a store. I would be hesitant to make such a large generalization that all black people face this.

 

In fact, my friend and I recently had a discussion at homecoming about an issue similar to this. He was born in Nigeria, moved to Atlanta when he was 5, and then ended up at a small college campus in Danville for his higher education. His parents aren't wealthy, but they are financially stable. We are pretty open with each other when it comes to race issues, and so I asked him if he ever felt like an "odd man out" being on a predominantly white campus. He laughed and said not even remotely,"y'all my bros" I asked him if he ever felt differently when going off campus, and he equated that to me going to a gas station in the ghettos of Atlanta.

 

I know what he is talking about with the going into a gas station in Atlanta thing, because working on the west side of Cincinnati, I get quite a few unwelcoming looks as well.

 

My original contention was that, just because someone isn't black, doesn't mean they can't know the struggle. I am not saying I do, by any means. Conversely, I don't think that being black just automatically means that you share the same struggle as every black person out there. If this opinion offends anyone, sorry.

Just because "All" do not experience it doesn't mean it isn't applicable.

 

As are many things in life "understanding the struggle" is about degrees. It's not binary. Some are trying to make this as simple as "rich black cannot understand the struggle." Simply not true and illogical. So we agree that you do not have to black to understand it. However, NOT being black does put you and me at a disadvantage (if that's the right word) in "getting it fully." We'll NEVER fully get it because of not fully experiencing it.

I already know you get it. Most people do get it. Sadly some don't.

 

I should have been more clear in my post. There are a lot of white people that do understand or they are at least sympathetic to the plight. It's not easily explainable.
