Det. Daniel Neil Ellis, 33, husband of Katie Elizabeth Gruenwald Ellis of Richmond, passed away Friday, November 6, 2015 at the University of Kentucky Medical Center.

 

Daniel was born April 22, 1982 to Kelly and Nancy West Ellis. He graduated from Eastern Kentucky University and was with Law Enforcement for the Richmond Police Department. He was a member of the Madison County F.O.P. Lodge #47, a member of the Kentucky Narcotics Association, the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity and a member of the East End Church of Christ in Lexington, KY.

 

Other than his wife Katie and his parents, Daniel is survived by his son Luke Michael Ellis, two brothers Jeremy (Amanda) West, Eric (Heather) Ellis, one sister Kelli Marie (Jason) Ellis Bush, his paternal grandmother Clara Ellis Schoenberger, mother and father-in-law Nancy and Greg Gruenwald, a sister-in-law Amy (Dylan) Gruenwald Holt and several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services for Daniel, will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 11, 2015 at the E.K.U. Alumni Coliseum, with Minister Phillip Shumake officiating. Visitation will be from 2:00 – 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 10, 2015, at E.K.U. Alumni Coliseum.

 

In lieu of flowers the family has requested donations to the Kentucky Law Enforcement Memorial Foundation. Funderburk Building, 521 Lancaster Avenue. Richmond, Kentucky 40475-3102

My sister knew Detective Ellis very well and interacted with him on a daily basis. She texted me yesterday saying that she was heartbroken, as was the entire police department. "Very somber and much heartache" was her exact words.

Is he related to the Bardstown officer that was killed?

 

I don't think so.

The wife, little boy, fellow officers, and other relatives were at the EKU game today, and Ellis was honored with a moment of silence prior to game. It was beyond sad to see his wife so heart broken and the young son not really aware of what this has done to his family. I hope justice puts all of those involved in Det. Ellis's death away for the ret of their lives (in my opinion, the shorter the better).

Funeral Procession was a little over 11 miles long when it came through Pulaski County today. Around 350+ cars still in the procession as it reached Somerset today. I was set up at the western end of town and a police officer near me reported over his radio that the 1st car of the procession had just reached us and another officer reported the last car was just passing him at the same time. That put the distance at over 11 miles long.

 

People lined the highway pretty much from one end of town to the other paying respect and honoring Ofc Ellis and his family.

A Madison County grand jury on Tuesday returned an indictment, charging four suspects in the Nov. 4 shooting of Richmond police officer Daniel Ellis and an attempted robbery reported earlier that day.

A 10-count indictment was returned Tuesday against Gregory Ratliff and Raleigh Sizemore, the man accused of fatally shooting Ellis on Nov. 4. That indictment stemmed from Ellis' shooting. Other charges filed were related to an attempted robbery that occurred earlier in the day. Ellis had been investigating the attempted robbery when the shooting occurred.

Authorities have said Ellis was investigating the attempted robbery outside a Shell station and that investigation led him to Ratliff's home on Ballard Drive in Richmond. Police have said Ratliff opened the front door, allowing Ellis to enter the home, and he told the officer that no one else was inside. Sizemore was hiding at the back of the home, and police said he shot Ellis as soon as he reached the back bedroom door.

The indictment charges Sizemore, 34, with murder, two counts of attempted murder, unlawful imprisonment, being a felon in possession of a handgun, being a persistent felon.

A second indictment was returned against Sizemore, stemming from an incident on Nov. 2. According to court documents, Sizemore pointed a gun in a woman's face during an altercation. The woman apparently had an emergency protective order against Sizemore. He was indicted on charges of first-degree wanton endangerment, violation of an emergency protective order and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon and being a persistent felon.

Ratliff was indicted on charges of complicity to murder, two counts of complicity to attempted murder and first-degree complicity to unlawful imprisonment. The indictment says Sizemore fired at two other officers who arrived at the home.

The indictment charges Banks, Creech and Sizemore with first-degree attempted robbery stemming from an attempt to steal a woman's purse. The indictment says Sizemore was armed with a revolver while the others tried to take the purse.

The four suspects were arraigned earlier this month. All four entered not guilty pleas in Madison County court.

 

 

Grand jury indicts suspects in Richmond police officer's killing

Prosecutor told the judge today that they will seek the death penalty for the shooter, as well as the guy who let the Detective in to search the house.

 

The shooter is charged with murder - police officer and the other is charged with complicity for the same charge.

 

The judge also refused to lower the bond for the other two accused in participating in the attempted robbery.
