Player Ejected Over Celebration

Kid in AZ was ejected after receiving his 2nd unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. He raised his hand and pointed to the sky. Did it twice. Penalty both times. Ejected.

High school football player claims he was ejected for praising G - CBS 5 - KPHO

Sometimes as an official you need to take the spirit of the rule into consideration. Having called high school basketball and baseball I can tell you that the pre-game lecture we give is about sportsmanship centered on no taunting. Who in their right mind thinks raising your hand to the sky to praise your god is taunting?

Kid now has to miss the first playoff game.

That's terrible if indeed that's all he did. Shame on that ref.

Pointing to the sky or holding up a finger that means we are #1?

And the obvious irony of the player wearing his teams "Demon Pride" t-shirt for the interview.

First, I don't disagree that preventative officiating is the better half of valor....

However, after the first Unsportsmanlike penalty I would argue that the same infraction would yield an ejection. Whether you agree with the first flag or not (I do not) the second offense gets you an early out. The official established the tone, like or not, don't we always say: "Adjust" ?

First one is weak and shouldn't have been called. But, after he gets called for the first one and I assume told why, why would he do it a second time. The second one is on the player. I agree, the first one shouldn't have been called.

We agree there. Once you've set the precedent....

After watching the video, the call definitely seemed excessive to me. I don't see how that would warrant a flag at any time.

Same thing was called on Dee Cain Friday night v. Mayfield.

We get stupider and stupider.

There have been some threads on excessive unsportsmanlike conduct calls in Ky games throughout this season. Was there some new focus put on this by officials this year?

That call is freaking over the top. BUT, it was called the first time, precident set. Follow rules.

The ref must be an atheist. The student-athlete needs a nice lawsuit filed regarding the abuse of his civil rights.

Sadly, that is a world we live in.

What does the rule book / case book say?
