If (when) we increase our # of classes to 5 or 6, shouldn't we also reduce the number of playoff teams to 16 and cut out a week of playoffs?

In the hypothetical proposals we have seen, there could be anywhere from 36-50 teams per class under a 5 or 6 class system. However, the higher numbers can only be a result of the KHSAA approving a "super 16" format for either the top, bottom or both classes and IMO that is not very likely for several reasons.

Much more probable, IMO, is that the KHSAA will go to a 5 or 6 class, evenly divided system. This will result in either 43 or 36 teams per class, respectively.

Our current playoff system allows for 32 teams out of 54 in each class to make the post season, a participation rate of 60%. And I know some people consider that too many. So if we further reduce class size, shouldn't we also reduce the number of teams making the playoffs?

In a 6 class, evenly divided system, there would be 36 teams per class. (216 / 6). In that scenario, is it justifiable to have a 32 team playoff and only exclude 4 teams? That would be 89% participation.

In a 5 class, evenly divided system, there would be 43 teams per class. (216 / 5). In that scenario, having 32 teams make the post season would mean that roughly 75% of all teams make the playoffs.

If we were to reduce the number of teams making the playoffs, I would like to see an 11 game season. I do think that 75% of teams making the playoffs in a 6 class system is too high, however, in all other sports 100% make the postseason. Just something to consider.

I was thinking the other way. We could go to a 10 week season and eliminate the bye week. In addition, reducing the number of teams making the playoffs to 16 would shorten the season by another week.

This two weeks would allow us to beat the heat by starting a bit later.

I am just thinking more along the lines of playing 11 games. More games means more PT and more revenues for schools. I am okay with eliminating the bye week, but am really in favor of 11 games if the number of teams in the playoffs is reduced to 16 per class.

I've heard this mentioned a lot, should we move in this direction?

It wouldn't bother me. Indiana has more teams than Kentucky does and the everybody makes the playoffs system works fine there.

There are, however, some ugly scores in the early rounds of the playoffs.

I don't think we should. The playoffs should be an earned right not an automatic in all sports. However, in other sports, I would like the districts to be required to seed and eliminate the blind draw as an option. That way you don't get teams getting to the regions by virtue of the draw. It happens every year in numerous districts that still use the blind draw. Football is closer to the way it should be done. Only the top 4 teams in each district make the playoffs, and they are seeded by regular season records as to who they play in the regional playoffs. But I have a better chance of winning the lottery than basketball reducing the number of teams in the playoffs.

While I am not in favor of this, as long as we allow all teams in every other sport in KY to make the postseason, it will be an argument that will be made.

There are under the system we have now too.

Toots, while I agree with your thoughts, don't get your hopes too high. Its not going to happen that way, in my opinion based on my intel. LN

Naturally

I don't mind cutting out playoffs, but I still want our season to be in the 14-15 game ballpark.....

I don't see them cutting the amount of playoff teams, might as well keep the four class format.

We won't have a 4 class format once they decide what they are going to do. It will be 5 or 6 classes.

Or start the same and stop putting teams like Belfry at a disadvantage come basketball season.

The reg. season should be 11 games, with 16 making the playoffs.
