My dogs go crazy when someone knocks. Know how many times they have ran out towards the person knocking? Zero. If they did, that is my fault.

I don't, I've found a squirt from a water bottle repels 10/10 dogs. However, I have witnessed pepper spray stop all manner of dogs dead in their tracks.

 

This homeowner shares some blame. You should be able to restrain your animal. However, that doesn't excuse the officer. He approached this door with his hand on his weapon and shot an animal that wasn't lunging or attacking.

Nobody is debating your last statement. I mean, that much is obvious. It could also be re-worded as "had he not shot their dog it would be alive". Both statements are true. However, neither furthers the debate.

Maybe the crux of the issue is not that the officer responded.

 

Maybe the real debate is the level of response. Was lethal response necessary. Is it always necessary to shoot instead of spray?

 

Are officers trained in how to respond to aggressive dogs with only lethal means?

 

The truth is the officer was doing a service to the community.

 

The home owners were spending an ordinary day when their dog rushed out to "engage" the new visitor at the door.

 

The dog, the family pet, is dead. That dog will never return. That family will never recover from the shock of this incident.

 

Fault, blame, prosecution, punishment are all secondary to the above IMO.

Why do police approach a car they pulled over for speeding with their hand on the gun. There isn't a threat from a guy speeding, right? There was a car left with it's door wide open. Maybe police officer thought it was some kind of domestic dispute. There is no audio so we have no idea what the police officer heard. I do not have a problem with the police officer having his hand on the gun when he knocks on the door.
