October 30, 201510 yr I own a German shepherd. She loves people, but is appropriately protective of our home. I never answer the door unless I know where she is and know that I have control over her. If that was my dog, I would be very upset that she got killed doing her "job" on my property. I would be equally mad at myself for my failure to control her. I think that the officer was wrong for shooting that dog, but his actions were quick and instinctive. There was no malicious intent. It was an unfortunate mistake, but the blame cannot be totally placed on the officer. I have a golden retriever/sheltie mix that is the same. It is my job at a pet owner to keep her secure when someone knocks at the door. I also can't believe that people are upset that the officer is checking out the open door. There are so many situations where a car door left open can be a sign of trouble. There is nothing wrong with a cop just wanting to make sure things are okay, rather than just respond after the fact.
