Playoff System

Featured Replies

Is there any talk of changing the playoff system or the current classification system?

None that I've heard outside of on here.

KHSAA isn't going to do it anytime soon IMO.

I just wish they would go to seeding the playoffs.

Pep, Is the reason they don't do that pretty much solely because of 6A Jefferson County?

I thought that the current system was a form of seeding (1 vs. 4, 2 vs. 3); at least in the early rounds.

Mc, I believe what he's specifically speaking about is that at least recently the top 3, 4, 5 or 6 6A teams all come from Jefferson County (maybe within 1 district, now 2); so his plea is to move the playoff picture from eliminating all but 1 of the Top 3-6 teams by the semi-final round to basically a March Madness type seeding where those referenced Top 3-6 teams could get 1 though 6 in the top seed and not play each other until the final rounds and ultimately championship game like it used to be (St X vs Trinity in the Finals, for example).

Isn't the ultimate goal to, at least in theory, have the best two teams playing for the championship? If so, how else can it be done without seeding?

Tiger, I could be off here, but I believe it is this way because "some" of the other 6A public schools threatened to break off from playing the "private" schools, similar to the situation in Tennessee. When that took place; it took us to this system we have now.

I know that was rumored Purple. Logistically and financially it is probably far fetched to think you could seed 6 classes all the way out. That would be a nightmare. Seeding region champs would not be near the headache or financial burden. Logistics wouldn't be that great a deal if centralized locations were used. That is the only way I could see seeding ever being a possibility.

If they wont seed the wrestling state tournament (the one tournament you could actually do it in) they are not going to do it for Football.

Seeding the entire playoffs would be very suspect with unbalanced schedules across the state...five teams are 9-1 how would you decide who was what seed? Please don't say polls, computer like Ohio or some selection committee...just play it out on the field. Yes it sucks that some team might be the second best team in that state and get beat by the best team in the regional final...but it is what it is.

Seeding for the playoffs would probably ONLY work for 6A due to travel distances in other classes. Imagine if 1A was seeded 1-32 in the playoffs and you had Fulton playing Hazard in the first round...5 hour+ drive for the visitor and that's just one example from one class.

I would wager it has more to do with travel costs.

Apparently in Kentucky it isn't.

So, what how much whining and crying were Highlands and CovCath doing for years when they were the two best teams but were in the same district.
