New Record KY Elk

If you hit a deer with your car would make sure the meat didn't go to waste?

I have personally assisted on several occasions to make sure the meat didn't go to waste.

Well I would doubt that this dude doesn't eat the meat. Elk is as good as it gets. I'd be shocked if any elk, anywhere, goes uneaten.

Elk meat is very different from deer meat and at time indistinguishable from beef. Elk tend graze on grasses, deer do not, they are more nut and legume eaters, hence the "gamey" taste.

I am constantly on the lookout for fresh roadkill, and by fresh I mean, happened in front of me fresh....I do not believe in wasting anything.

My hunting philosophy is if you kill it, you eat it.

I would also agree that it won't be long before we see a Top Tier record elk from KY. It has been an awesome restoration program that rivals only the turkey restoration program in KY. The guys at KDFWR are getting really good at restoring wildlife to the Commonwealth.

Most counties have a list of people willing to come pick up any "Fresh" road kill deer.

I have quite a few police officer friends who have a list to call to come get fresh roadkill.

Any idea what it would cost for the taxidermy on something that large?

A whitetail will cost $300-$400 on the low end. I've seen prices as high as $800. No idea on an elk. Would think $1000 min.

Probably have to use $50 worth of rebar in the form. :D

Actually looks like most in KY charge$800-$1000 for elk shoulder mounts. Rebar sold separately.

You quarter it, like a beef.

Quartered my butt...eighthed maybe.:idunno:

Amen to that.
