How Would You Rank the Top 5 in Class 3A?

Featured Replies

Paducah should play Caldwell again just like Murray the last couple of years, winner will be in BG for the finals

Boyle and Central might have something to say about that since Boyle beat Central Hardin and Puducah Tillman lost to Central Hardin 48 to 25.

Not quite sure why Boyle is ranked #1 . I understand they dropped from 4-A to 3-A. They are winning but so are the state champs. I must be missing something here. Please enlighten me if I'm missing something.

1. Belfry, they are always good

2. Boyle, but not sure why.

3. Central, they seem to be right they come playoff time.

4. Caldwell

5. Russell, because I think they will be in the final 4

Agreed. Belfry should be #1 until it is proven they won't win state. Central should be ahead of Boyle also. Boyle has work to do to prove they are the best team in 3A. It should let just be handed to them or assumed they are better than Belfry or Central. Belfry and Central both have better wins than Boyle does.

I certainly like the enthusiasm, but getting past Belfry to win the region is going to be a tall order. I've seen nothing from Belfry so far this year that tells me they've come back to the pack. Russell has to get a lot better if they want to hang with the Pirates in November.

On the plus side, if they do meet, it will likely be at Russell. The Devils have several weeks to improve and try to gain some ground.

1. Belfry - undefeared, but hard to compare to the rest of 3A with no common opponents. Belfry will again be in the title game, they should have a cakewalk in the east.

2. Boyle Co - 4A team last year slipping to 3A in west. Top 10 regardless of class.

3. Caldwell Co - one loss team. Lost to a very good Christian Co team in week 1 missing a game winning field goal. Since settling on a QB (played 4 different guys in week 1) has done nothing but impress.

4. Central - team with the most impressive win in 3A, but also the most questionable loss in 3A. Can't afford those and continue in playoffs.

5. E'town - undefeated, but soft schedule. Not a top 4 team.

6. LexCath - good team, but questionable. Again a second tier team in 3A.

7. PT -Good team, but questionable. Same as #5 and #6 .

8. Russell - solid, but only ranked here because of their likely hood of advancing in playoffs due to a soft east side of bracket.

9. Bell Co - same as #8 . Toss up between the 2.

10. Union Co - top of the district for now, but soft schedule. Tough match-up for them come Friday. Sadly will finish 3rd in their district and see an early exit come playoffs.

I could be wrong but when and if Russell would play Belfry They both would already be in the final four. Russell is not at the same level as Belfry. Now next year I would give Russell a chance against Belfry.

They are in the same Region now.

Gotcha, Thanks

The last meeting between Russell and Belfry that was played in Russell was a classic.

I can't believe that was 10 years ago. Doesn't seem possible.

Great game.

Russell jumps out to a 20-0 lead and are about to ice it before the Half when Matt Maynard chases the ball carrier and makes up about 30 yards to strip him at the goal line.

Belfry scores 14 points in the 2nd Half and are driving for the win. Pirates score what may have been the Game Winning TD but it is called back for illegal motion. Russell's Kasey Clark intercepts a pass in the endzone. Russell goes on to win the 2A Title.

That play by Maynard was one of the best defensive plays I have ever seen at the high school level. No hype, it was just incredible.

Russell did a great job defensively and Belfry had to throw to TE Aaron Chapman a lot that game to stay in it. He had a monster game.

The penalty was legit, and a tough way to lose that game. Belfry was a flinch away from winning their third consecutive AA Championship.

That crowd was electric that night. The place was packed, there were a lot of marbles up for grabs and it was an exciting game. Even though I had to sit with @LRCW, and we lost a heartbreaker, it was still a good night for high school football. You don't see many atmosphere's better than that one was.

I agree that was one of the best games I have ever seen. I have yet to see that many fans at Russell.

Did you make the trip to Vipperman the year before? The last game ever at the historic old grounds for the semifinals. Biggest crowd I have ever seen there. Gross, Howard and Jones all rushed for 200+ yds that night and there were some jaw breaking hits. Really exciting and physical football at a high level.

It was bittersweet as after the game a ton of Belfry fans gathered and counted down as Belfry turned out the lights at Vipperman for the final time. Yes, I got misty eyed.

Another game that the turning point was a goal line fumble as well.

Early on Russell was going blow for blow with Belfry and was going in for an apparent Touchdown when David Jones DESTROYED Gross at the one yard line. Ball came out and Belfry recovered. A few plays later Belfry broke a long TD run and kept the game in hand until the end.

That's a game I have often wanted to buy just to watch again.

That game and the Pburg Regional Final the Week prior were surreal games. I literally saw people hanging in trees on the mountainside watching that game. If the Fire Marshal wasn't a Belfry fan he would have turned people away because capacity was beyond superceded.

I was there. I remember Jones hitting Gross so hard going into the end zone that Gross went one way and the ball went the other. That game could have been different if not for that play. Then Gross breaks into the open field on a kickoff and I can't remember if the kicker tackled him or knocked the ball out of his hands. I'll also never forget when Howard was carrying the ball and one of our defensive backs came up to tackle him and Howard grabbed him and threw him to the ground like a rag doll. That was also a great game and closer that the score showed. I hope that Russell can get back to those glory years. I feel next year will be the year that Russell will be able to hang with Belfry again.

5. Etown- Undefeated but their schedule hasn't been very challenging. Definitely a vastly improved team, but along with Adair County who is also undefeated against am embarrassingly soft schedule, we will not really get a great grip on how good either team until they play each other.

There have been a few weak teams on the schedule, but Etown has demonstrated they can compete. Beat 4A North Oldham 38-0, 6A North Hardin 34-28, 3A Bardstown 38-7. Don't forget they also shutout CAL in their scrimmage.

Will Etown be able to compete with Boyle, Belfry, Central, or even Caldwell and PT? I don't know, but we can't keep using the argument they haven't played anyone so we don't know how good they are.
