Conner 21 Newport Central Catholic 17

Okay lets start with giving Conner credit for being a smart team with a QB that does not let them get beat. Throws a nice ball and gets 3 yards when he needs 3 yards. Very poised. Sometimes you do not have to win a game if the other team is going to hand it to you. You just need to manage the game and make plays when necessary or not do something to put your team in trouble.

Conner Defense bent a lot but did not get beat on the final drive when NCC could have won the game. No penalties that I can remember.

For NCC.......could not have played a worse first half on offense, on defense and on brains. Three offsides in the first quarter when Conner was in long distance downs. Add in a personal foul or two. Only bright spot for NCC was 45 yard FG with 6 seconds left in half.

Second half NCC pretty much dominated but once again killed themselves with stupid penalties. 60 yard punt return was followed by a sack and then personal foul for pulling guys off the pile. 2nd and 31 and an INT in the endzone. Just awful.

After NCC scored on several long runs by other RB and then stopped Conner they had every chance to win the game. Drove right to 10 yard line but threw an INT and 4th and goal from the 5.

If Conner plays smart like tonight they can hang around in some 6A games but not against the better 6A teams.

If NCC ever plays a non-penalty game and actually play 4 quarters they could be a decent 2A playoff team.

I might have to retract my comment on the turnovers hurting the Breds.......now that I think about it, the penalties were ABSOLUTE killers.

Now that the rigorous NON-district portion of the schedule is complete (except the season finale with Beechwood), it's time for the Breds to take business with their district foes. As in years past, playing 4A, 5A, & 6A teams before district play has prepared this team for a long playoff march.

Learn and move on boys.

Real 6A contenders will wipe out both of those 2A teams too.

Hey now, there's a big difference between a '6A football team' and a 6A contender.

Frank summarized it pretty well.

Kyler Padgett is a really nice QB who probably deserves more credit that he's given. Doesn't panic. Keeps plays alive like the 3rd Conner TD.

Conner D over the last many years has been a problem. They now have some playmakers.

Joseph Cooper (#2) is one of the best corners I've seen in NKY in pass coverage.

You can say that again!!!

Great job Cougars!

NCC has everything they need to make a deep 2A run.

@doubledeuce said in another thread that he thought Jacob Smith was the best back in NKY. Tonight was the first chance I had to watch and that argument can be made. He had a few runs that made me think of Melvin Miles in 1983. Powell is a stud. TCA from Cooper is legit. Others as well but Smith is the most complete and is the most college-ready.

Was their play-offs run ever in doubt? Danville and (maybe) Shelby Valley are their only competition.

You have to hard count Malik Lawrence or he'll kill you off the snap. I think Conner got him 4 times tonight.

I think he had the 2 endzone INT's.

It was not just him. First two were on the DE.

He had the first one. #28 Warwick had the second one.

OK so maybe it was 3 on Lawrence.

Henchen is a nice QB with a funky throwing motion. Nice velocity. Threw a really nice quick slant to Wrobleski that went for 52. Not an easy pass for high school kids. He only had one bad pick and that was the first one. Long throw back across field - not very smart. The other two were understandable.

I can still see the picture in the newspaper with the heading, "Melvin runs for Miles".

A 6A football team should wipe out a 2A football team, not hang on for the win.

They will continue their 2A tour next week in Erlanger against the Juggs. This was once a 3A sub district game when there were only 4 classes.

Yes it was. I played in those sub-district games against the Juggs.
