New Class System - WHEN?

Featured Replies

Woody, I have a question. If they are going to start counting "only boys" how do you figure CCH doesnt move up. If they were to do that now, you cant tell me that they would still be in a class with Highlands (who plays up).

Because you would be counting their WHOLE school...whats their enrollment?

The whole schools enrollment for the current school year 05/06 school year per the Catholicweb.com is 510...

1. VERY nice work, Sandman, on getting a sample 6A breakdown. I know -- from experience -- it takes HOURS to take enrollment figures from a PDF file and retype them (since PDF, can't simply be cut and pasted into Excel), then sort them in numerical order.

However, despite any of our best efforts to predict the actual breakdown, a couple of things will keep all of us guessing until the FINAL decision is made at the KHSAA level (and I would think they'll be tight-lipped about exactly how they'll do it until after the meeting).

* First, I do believe they've been up-front that they WILL (as they should) go strictly by MALE enrollment for football. I'm not sure if Sandman did his breakdown based on the TOTAL enrollment (as I had done previously) or on the most-recent MALE-ONLY enrollments (I didn't even know these were available online until a week or so ago). Using male-only makes a HUGE difference in where some teams would land -- some schools have many more males than females and others vice-versa.

* Second, I've heard NO scuttle-butt (other than on this board) from coaches "in-the-loop" or KHSAA people with which I've had the opportunity to speak on the issue that there will be smaller classes at the top and bottom classes due to the enrollment disparity in those classes (actually, if anything, I'm getting the idea from them that splitting into 6 EVEN classes -- about 36 in each class -- is actually GOOD ENOUGH to solve the disparity problem).

Those things being said, I'm wondering if Sandman (or anybody else)...

1. ...has been able to do ANY type of 6-class (as that how it appears they'll go) breakdown based on BOYS-ONLY enrollment? (I've started one, but I've only had time to get 1-3A done...and I'm worried mine has some errors as I might've left some new programs out (I know of Bishop-Brossart, Gallatin Co., Clinton Co., Jackson Co., but I'll bet I'm leaving some out) and may not have excluded some of the schools that will NOT be playing football from '07 on (I know of Harrodsburg, but I'd assumed Evarts, Cawood, and Cumberland would be merging into Harlan Co. Central by '07 but someone told me maybe not).

2. ...has done breakdowns of ALL possible scenarios using MALE-ONLY enrollment?

* 5-classes split evenly (42 or 43 per class)

* 5 classes with "Super 5A"

* 5 classes with "Small 1A" and "Super 5A"

* 6-classes split evenly (36 per class)

* 6-classes with "Super 6A"

* 6-classes with "Small 1A" and "Super 6A" (like Sandman's previous listing, which I THINK was based on "overall" enrollment).

...I'm sure I'm not the only inquiring mind that would like to know!

(Again, I'm working on it myself, but it'll be a while -- Dead Period? -- until I get time to enter in the male enrollments of ALL football playing schools).

In the meantime, if ANYONE with GOOD information about who WILL and WILL NOT be playing football in '07 (new programs, merging schools, etc.) could post them here, it'll help my (and anyone else's) breakdown be as accurate as possible).

Ok, thanks, thats all i needed....They are not as big as I thought.

Thanks.

Just an FYI...Highlands does not CURRENTLY "play up." (NOBODY is allowed to do so in the CURRENT alignment.) Check the enrollment figures on the KHSAA website (http://www.khsaa.org) and you'll see that Highlands' enrollment makes them the fourth-smallest school in 3A.

There is a pretty good chance from what I'm hearing that in the NEW realignment teams MIGHT be allowed to "play up," but they're not RIGHT NOW. (I don't think teams have been allowed to "play up" in about 8 years.)

Good question but I dont have the figures. Im not sure if those are posted or iif what Sandman used were adjusted? You could Pm him and check to see about that factor.

Highlands does not play up. No one plays up anymore to my knowledge.(if you are referring to the current/recent setup)

I believe KHSAA changed that around 1989?? (someone else probably knows for sure)

Ashland had played up in the higher division for years against Boone Co, etc until the KHSAA eliminated that option and we were dropped to 3A where we belonged.

Woody Jr

well I just see that others are on top of things here

Teams were allowed to "play up" until 1999.

Great thread everyone.

I am looking forward to more from you in this thread CoachJ!!!

Construction of Harlan County High School will start in July. It should open in August of 2008.

I'll have to get working on it, I know I did the leg work for all those possiblilities under the current system. I think that if you divide the classes equally, then don't do it. It just doesn't go far enough IMO. The disparity is not very much impacted and it will end up with a feel good solution that does nothing.
