Rules Question - TD Reception?

Featured Replies

Last night in the Beechwood / Covington Catholic game there was a key play that I would like to know the high school rule on.

On basically the last play of the first half, a Beechwood receiver caught a ball in the end zone. He had both hands on the ball, under control, and had both feet on the ground in bounds. A Covington Catholic defender tackled the receiver and as they were going to the ground he ripped the ball out of the receiver's hands.

In high school, is that a touchdown?

I don't think there is any continuation rule in high school. Once you cross the goal line with possession of the ball it is a touchdown. Can anyone (officials?) tell me what the rule is in high school?

Once the ball crosses the plain and is in the possession of an offensive player the play is over and the ball is dead. Anything after is nothing.

Except, the defender was there right when the ball was. They fought for it, and it came out. He had possession solo for a split second if ever had it. I just happened to be standing behind the wall in that corner of the end zone....but I would like to refresh memory bc it was bang bang.

I think once he has possession, touchdown. It does not matter how long he has it. He clearly had possession. He wasn't bobbling the ball. He had it in his hands in the end zone. At that point it is a TD.

What about the fact that the ref closest to the play signaled touchdown? Then a ref who had to be at least 20 yards away runs over after the play is over and the band is playing the Beechwood fight song.

I saw a replay on the news last night. Not a touchdown.

His face was to their backs. The defensive player and ball arrived at the same time.

NFHS 2-4-1 says the player has to maintain possession. Interpretation is that possession must be maintained to the ground.

Was standing right there, never had control, refs got it right.

The receiver must maintain possession of the catch to the ground, without the ground assisting him in maintaining possession.
