Just like the NKY Pro Athlete thread....Who has went on to play in the NFL, NBA, MLB or any other professional sport from SE Ky?

This thread could get long, since it clearly is open to past pro players and not current pro players.

There are a few from Corbin. The Bird family, I know one was the Rookie of the year for Oakland in the 60s.

Also, this is just a list pf those BORN in the Commonwealth; others may have moved and played high school ball here.

Steve Bird, WR from Corbin HS, and EKU, played a couple of years in the NFL for the St. Louis Cardinals.

Calvin, Rodger, and Steve Bird all played in the NFL. Jerry Bird played in the NBA and at UK. I'm sure there are some more from Corbin that I am missing out on.

Ricky Engle did not go to high school in Corbin as he moved away. He did come back one summer to stay with his uncle and he played on my youth baseball team(his uncle was our coach). He was a pretty dominant left-handed pitcher back in those days, but I believe that his cousin told me that he only got called up during one year to the majors.

Don't forget Johnnie LeMaster from Paintsville. He Played for the Pirates and Giants...not sure of any other team.

 

Also, on a side note, LeMaster is the only player in MLB history to hit an inside-the-park home run in his first major league at bat.

Robert Damron, a Pikeville native, is currently on the PGA tour...

How about Peanut?? In 1985, he played 12 games with the Giants, then was traded to the Clevland Indians where he played 11 more games. After being traded again, he finished the 85' season with the Pirates playing in 22 games. After a year off, he joined the Oakland A's in 1987 and played among players like Mark McGwire, Jose Canseco, Reggie Jackson, and Dennis Eckersley. After that season he retired after only playing 20 games that entire season in his 12th season at the age of 33.

A buddy of mine played against him in legion ball and said as far as he knew that he was always called "peanut". That is what his teammates called him and everyone else. He said that Lemaster was heck of a nice guy and unbelievable shorstop with a rifle arm and in legion ball was a dangerous hitter. Lemaster was also one heck of a player for Paintsville.

That Brandon Webb kid isn't doing too bad for the D-backs right now!

You are correct but we're treading that confusing line of what & where is Eastern KY. He asked for SOUTH eastern so we didnt jump in.

 

I think the legislature needs a bill clarifying what is eastern KY :lol: :lol:
