I have always been curious why the word Recruiting is such a bad word and a "no no."

 

I would say recruiting means : to try and convince someone to attend your school based on the schools strengths

 

would everyone agree to this simple definition???

 

If yes, Please tell me how private schools are to survive with out promoting their school's strength's and so on.. even Trinity only had 25% fathers that graduated from T

 

Private schools do recruit students. If we called it advertising-promoting-soliciting.... would that be better and make others happy?

 

Life is never fair and for the same reasons Manual, Male and PRP etc.. attract students through their strengths so do private schools

If they can draw from those wide of boundaries then it is not fair to a public schools. Just look at the Massey Ratings for football teams and look at all the private schools near the top. Bottom line- wide range of students to chose from, without the risks of recruiting violations. If we talk to another kid from another school public schools will report them to the KHSAA. Private and Public should be split up period.

The real sad part about people that share your opinion about the split is we are only talking about 1 sport, Football. Kentucky is way to small of a state to divide just for 1 sport!

 

Maybe X and t should not play PRP in baseball or Ballard-Male in Basketball b/c we cannot consistantly beat them...

Knute, Jefferson County, Kenton County, and other counties are able to draw from outside their boundaries.

 

It's NOT a state law, it's a district by district decision. Unless a there is some LAW that public schools have to follow that private schools don't, with respect to enrollment policies, your statements hold no water. There's nothing unfair about it. Public schools can choose to open their districts. It CAN be done. Jefferson County did it. With your statements, you'd have to throw JCPS schools in with the privates because a kid can live in Kosmosdale near the Meade Co line and attend Ballard if he/she chooses. Ballard is clear across the county, 20 miles or 29 minutes as estimated by Yahoo Maps. Valley High School, Doss, Iroquois Western High School, PRP...all are MUCH closer.

Its a matter of context. It is not "bad" to recruit someone to your school. Both public and private schools do this and quite legally. However, you can't recruit someone to your school to play sports as the focus. We all know that certain programs success has led to further success because students tend to go where they can be a part of something great. This happens all over Jefferson county in both public and private schools.

I'll be honest, Woody, I have no idea. I've tried to understand the defense of closed boundaries, but my feeble mind simply cannot grasp it.

 

I believe that competition for students strengthens schools. It creates an atmosphere whereby schools MUST attain and maintain higher levels of quality in their education and I simply don't understand why, if it's a possibility, school districts don't embrace it.

Public schools can choose to open their districts. It CAN be done. Jefferson County did it.

It is not just those counties but several counties which border on other states accept students from not just outside their county, but across the border.

I guess it depends on the school the student is interested in. Manual and Male are most likely pretty much to capacity, but I do know a few OOC students who attend.

 

There are 21 (22 if you count YPAS as a high school) Public high schools in Jefferson County. That's a lot of schools, and then there are the Private schools as well.

The REALLY sad part is that it is 4A football! Show me somewhere in history where 1A, 2A or 3A have been so dominant that everybody wants them kicked out for football purposes. Unfortunatly people don't look at the big picture and they are quick to jump on the bandwaggon. T+X have dominated in 4A. It starts and stops there. Some how every other Private school has an unfair advantage even though none of them have ever dominated at the state level. People are so narrow minded that they let those two schools dominate the perception of what Private schools do all over the state as far as football is concerned. I'm not going to get sucked into the public/private debate because that shouldn't be the issue. The problem is that the rule is now unworkable. The rule is: YOU CAN'T TRANSFER..........but if a.........b.................c..........or d.then the KHSAA can waive the rule.

One of the exceptions is for a change of residence. Great. But then the change of residence can't be for primarily athletic reasons. This is so convuluted that it can't be applied equitably. Transferees to private school always have the justification that I want to go to private school. Why shouldn't a kid from North Hardin be able to simply say, for example, "I want to go to Male". If that kid happens to be 6'2" and run a 4.45 and hits like a Mack truck, so what. But he still has to apply for a waiver and hope the powers that be will believe his parents (or the aunt, cousin, older brother or distant acquaintance who has obtained his custody) wanted to move to Jefferson County to be closer to the river and not so he can play ball.

 

There have been so many notable transfers of high profile athletes to private schools that never get a second look from the KHSAA that it has to anger the public school people when they get called on the carpet over a transfer and then someone alleges they recruited him.

 

Eliminate the problem. Recruit all you want. Everybody. Let coaches make in home visits. Let them bring kids in for campus visits - they can take them to the local Sonic. But either let everyone transfer without penalty or let no one. If everyone, without exception had to sit out a year, there would be much less contraversy. Trinity and X aren't going to notice a kid until after is 10th grade year. If they want to wait until he is a Senior for him to play again, fine.
