The latest controversy is all the more reason we should go to 6 classes and not 5!

Featured Replies

how would that be fair for the other 14 schools in T and X? Sure be better for everyone else, but T and X still would almost double the Male enrollment of the biggest public school.

What should we do? Split up into four seperate teams, guess what? One of ours is still going to win, regardless of size, we are better than most....year in and year out.

At first glance, the 6A sounds like it would be just too few schools to be all that feasible... 16 teams spread across the state would make for some unreal regular season travel times.

Actually if you made 4 team districts and 8 team regions, we would be able to schedule a real sexy schedule.

What I would also consider doing is not making any districts (or make them very small districts) for 1A and 6A.

This is where the KHSAA can come in, if they start taking some of the postseason gates they would be in a position to ease the costs for the 1A and 6A teams if travel was an issue for district games.

All of this can work if the powers to be want it to work.

I'm sure this is not 100% correct, as the legwork that created this list is old, but it should give you an idea and be somewhere in the ball park.

1A 16 schools

2A 45 schools

3A 45 schools

4A 45 schools

5A 46 schools

6A 16 schools

Based on this model, how diluted can it be? The smallest and largest should be "competitive" with each other. The 2A thru 5A classes go from 53 or 54 schools to 45 or 46 in a class and there is less of a size disparity, how is that a bad thing? It also keeps us from a public vs. private split. So again, how is this a bad thing?

Is there anyone else who feels that the future of KY is more consolidations?

That would mean fewer & fewer 1A and/or 2A schools and more & more 4A schools probably (or 5A??)

ie., a 16 team 1A division could maybe find itself real short soon?

Just asking b/c I had heard no one mention the possibility of Harrodsburg's loss anytime this topic was discussed

I don't think there are too many possible consolidations left unless we do something about the fact that we have way too many counties in Kentucky.

If you have 16 in a class, do you go with four four-team regions? If you allow teams to play up and have only 16 in a class, what do you do if four or five teams want to play up? I asked this question on a previous thread and no one answered. I think the playing up theory must sound good to people, but they don't want to hear about the potential problems that must be addressed.

1A, It would require the consent of a larger school in the next class and the KHSAA to let the school next smallest willing to drop down and who's program was struggling at the current level to drop down. 2 thru 4 should have to stay put. 5A teams should have the option if a 6A team historically has had trouble competeing at the current 4A level and petitions the KHSAA for consideration to drop down a level. If no school wishes to drop down a level the petition should be denied. it should be mandatory to maintain only 16 teams in 1A and 6A.

4 team regions sound right, also, the other classes will have to be flexible in scheduling so as to allow the 16's to play a complete 10 game season.

One more thing, the playoffs for the 1A and 6A classes would start with a bye or be played the week before, either way I don't care.

Now, I'm sure I missed something so feel free to point it out.:p

Sounds fine with me.

Thanks for finding that Sandman. If we are going to go away from 4 classes (which I think is enough) it has to be to 6 classes and not just 5 classes so we can solve the disparity in enrollment to the best of our ability.

^ I certainly feel that the ability to play up is a must in any expansion of class.

I think the play up factor will change the numbers way too much. It should be decided and people should accept it. No matter what happens, people will be upset either way.

I have been stating all along that 5 classes was plenty and we didn't need 6. However, after reading more of these posts, maybe 6 classes actually would do more to help the current situation. Personally, I am starting to like the 6 class idea. IF DONE RIGHT, it could help resolve some of the enrollment disparities we discuss on here over and over and over again. I like the 6A 'Superclass' idea. And looking at potential breakdowns of the classes, there are some very intriguing potential matchups in the area of the state in which I live.

EG. Having the following 8 teams in the same class (which some have been off and on over the years) could be very interesting come playoff time and could make for some interesting district breakdowns.,

Southwestern; Clay County; Lincoln County; Pulaski County; Perry County Central; Whitley County; South Laurel & North Laurel, ... and that's just 5A in the SE part of the state. Several have played each other, even outside of district play, but to be in the same district/region/class again for many of these, could be very interesting indeed!

I like the idea, but wonder how it could be done without having to rework the classes every few seasons.

Harlan County High School would probably be in that mix. I could see them in the same district as Whitley, North, South, Clay, Letcher Central and Perry Central. Or perhaps North and South go into a district with Lincoln, Pulaski and Southwestern etc.

That's a very good breakdown with the list of six classes, but it should be pointed out that several of those schools have closed (Whitesburg, Fleming-Neon and Harrodsburg) or will close (Cawood, Cumberland and Evarts).
