Where did all the Mayfield fans go?

To milan....lol

No updates?

We looked solid on both sides of the ball. We can tweak a few things on defense like the safety coverage but overall we were solid. For a 2A school to beat Mayfield they will have to be very good and well coached or Mayfield beats themselves. Mayfield has an over abundance of athletes.

21-15 final.. All Varsity.. Neither JV team scored.. No kickoffs in the game as the other team would take over at there own 35 after a score. Everything else was just like a regular game.

Milan got the ball 1st and had a huge pass play that went inside the Cards 10, but, it was called back for a hold and Mayfield held them to 1 1st down and then forced a punt. Mayfield took over inside there own 10 and Tragon Bright took the 1st play in for a score, only to be called back for a clip or hold, but, still got the ball out of there own endzone to about midfield, a couple of plays later, Arnett hooked up on a TD pass from about 35 yards out.. After a 3 and out for Milan, Mayfield got the ball back again and after a few plays, scored again to go up 14-0.. Milan put together a good drive and had the ball inside the Cards 20 when the Cards forced a fumble. Mayfield scored again to go p 21-0. Milan scored on its next possession and tried a fake PAT that was successful, 21-8 Mayfield. The Cards put together a couple of other drives that had them deep in Bulldog territory, but, once had a pick in the end zone and were turned away on downs on the other. Milan scored on a long pass play after the int to cut the lead to 21-15, but, were unable to get any closer..

I thought Mayfields D looked very good against the run, but, did give up some big pass plays. They've gone to a 3-4 front with 4 really good LBs that all swarm to the ball and they all tackle well. Very few missed tackles vs the run and while they did give up some passing yards, they had their moments where the coverage looked solid. Just need to get more consistent there.

I thought the Cards looked sharp on offense.. Arnett is very accurate with his passes and makes good decisions when flushed from the pocket.. He's very mobile, as well.. I was very impressed with the RBs and WRs.. I knew Bright would get his, but, they're far from a one man show in the backfield. I thought 3 or 4 other RBs looked great, ran hard, hit the holes quickly and showed great balance and elusiveness and they're a little bigger in the backfield than what they've had in the past couple of years. They have 3 or 4 nice looking receivers. Again, you knew Kennemore was going to get his, but, they have other weapons as well that showed great hands and good route running ability. I thought the LT and LG were solid. The C had some trouble with a few snaps and didn't get much penetration against a good sized and athletic Milan front 4. The other 2 OL did an adequate job, but, will need to get better. Depth is an issue on the OL. They can't afford any injuries, as there's a big drop off after the 1st 5 or 6 kids.

The kicking game will once again be solid as he was 4 for 4 on PATs and had a couple of nice punts..

Milan is a solid ball club. They dress a ton of kids, have some very athletic RBs and WRs, their QB can really zip the ball and they have good size in the trenches on both sides of the ball. They'll be a threat to make a deep 3a run in Tn this year.

Overall, not a bad showing for the Cards at all, for a 1st scrimmage. After tonight, I'm optimistic about the season. If the OL can gel together and stay healthy and they can shore up in the secondary just a little, they're going to be very, very good team, who'll be tough to beat. I absolutely love the skill players on this team. Should be fun to watch all year..

Mayfield scored on their first drive, a 90 yard affair that featured Trajon Bright take it 90 yards on the first play only to have a completely unnecessary clip take the ball back to around midfield. A few place later Mf cased in on a 32 yard pass.

Mayfield struck again on their 3rd possession of the game, a 60 yard drive capped by a 20 yard TD pass to Kennemore.

Mayfield scored again on what was their 5th series, it was a 1 play, 37 yard pass that was setup after Mf recovered a Milan fumble at the Milan 37.

That was it for the Cards scoring. With a 21 point lead Milan mounted a long drive aided by a offside penalty on 4TH down. A fake PAT made it 21-8. Mayfield then took the ball at their 35 and marched 70 yards and fumbles the ball into the Milan endzone for a touchback. Milan responds with a 60 yard TD strike to make the score 21-15. On the next possession Mayfield goes 3 and out and the rest of the way was played by the JV.

Milan is ranked #5 (3A) in the preseason coaches poll. They lost a scrimmage last week to #1 ranked Henry County 10-0.

Colby Tucker is going to be a stud at WR, he went down last year in the 3rd game of the season or he would be as well known as Kennemore is now.

The highly touted frosh running back Trey Mathews is the real deal and will provide solid backup for Bright. This kid will be a star the next couple of years. Bright got very few touches tonight which isn't that surprising.

Other than a couple of passes that went right through the receiver's hands, I don't have any problems with what I saw on the field last night. It will be another solid Mayfield team. I like the way Bright has bulked up, he's becoming more of a true football player with strength, speed and better moves up the field. Seems to me we are faster in more positions this year. This is going to give a lot of teams fits, as it always does.

Good tackling too, it seems there have been some times over the last couple of years where we had gotten into too much arm tackling. There were some nice licks laid last night. Considering Milan already had a scrimmage under their belt this year, and to one of the best teams in Tennessee, I think the Cards held their own and then some. If I had to give them a grade, I'd say A-

Mayfield has always been a 3A school playing in 1A. They are just better than all the teams in 1A & 2A. There are a few teams in 2A that will give them a good game but, they really belong in 3A and they would be a top 5 team every year. I'm not sure they wouldn't dominate 3A. Mayfield is a dynasty and pound for pound the best team in the state almost every year.

Cards... as expected...are gonna be tough again

Reflecting on the scrimmage I felt it reflected exactly what most thought it would. The skills positions are overflowing with talent and the line is a work in progress. This team will struggle to open hole for the run game, especially early on but having a well above average pass game that features multiple playmaker targets will take some of the pressure off the run game and the run game will have running backs that are extremely good. As some others stated, this has to be the quickest team man for man we have had recently and one of the fastest ever IMO. This team gets better as that young line gets better and they will certainly have a great shot at getting back to the promise land

Yikes! As a DeSales fan, would someone please post something about the scrimmage that gives me some hope????? :-)

Mayfield ain't won the title yet. Lets just say we have a promising start. Looking forward to a possible matchup.

Desales Dad, you and your team have nothing to fear, the Cardinals will be solid in the speed department, but there are still areas of concern, such as line strength and secondary coverage. Alot can happen between now and playoffs, but we did look pretty good against Milan, and they had a pretty good team. I think Desales depth could play a big factor in any game they play against a 2A school. Mayfield will probably be lucky to dress out 40.
