Jim Shue had a picture of an old baseball card (Nate Colbert, I think) where the picture was in one uniform but he was traded to another team and that team was on the card. It got me to thinking back to the 70s when I collected cards. Figured I'd start a thread.

 

One thing I recall is the card makers would paint on a new hat/uni if the guy was traded.

I remember collecting quarters and nickels to buy packs.

They were .30 cents at the local store.

Nah, just wondering how many hundred-dollar cards you ruined by affixing them to your bicycle spokes.

I had both Colbert's and Gamble's cards that were shown. Probably had a small fortune at one time with shoe box on shoe box full of cards that I just give away before what they became(price-wise) at one time. Lots and lots of great memories

I still have all of my old cards.

Unfortunately...collecting was ruined by too many companies and specialty cards.

I have a couple of Topp's #1 draft pick cards for Frank Thomas. He was playing in his Auburn University uniform. I always thought that was a cool card.

My first cards are from the late 70s early 80s.

Early to mid

In last week's Sports Illustrated they did a feature on players who had iconic baseball cards.

 

Oscar Gamble was one of them. He was ordered by Steinbrenner to get his hair cut after the Boss saw that card or the picture that led to the card. He was to do a commercial for hair company and Steinbrenner said he didn't care he had to cut it. Steinbrenner paid for the commercial fee and haircut which was like $87.

I was born in 65 so the Big Red Machine was on fire when I was growing up. I started buying packs in the store. Then it became more fun and went to another level when I would work, save my money and buy a really good card at a collector's show. I remembering cleaning up my dad's garden, running into a snake, so I could buy a 56 Jackie Robinson card. My good friend Jimmy Murray, who I miss dearly, loved to collect baseball cards as well. We spent several summer days between the ages of 11 & 15 trading cards. We both had around 10,000. We would stack up our doubles and go through year by year, box by box, team by team. Great memories.
