Are you sure it is Tim Viox? This conflicts with what was reported on here the other day. Someone posted Tom Viox was the new coach. Tom was the former Head Varsity Coach at Fairfield. Tim was the former Frosh. coach at Fairfield.

 

Is this the man who is going to put in the triple option? If so, I'll be interested to see how Newport does with it. I really like the offense.

 

Which ever man got the job, I wish him good luck. Places like Newport desperately need strong role models to step up everywhere including the football field. A lot of these kids need football in their lives in order to recognize their worth and potential. I wish the program nothing but success.

I'm pretty sure the poster who said they hired Tom Viox had a typo or just got his name wrong and that his name is Tim Viox.

 

Based off the link onespirited fan posted he has been a Varsity head coach at Maderia, Northwest, and then Fairfield and then took a year off and became the freshman coach at Fairfield. So he has alot of experience but his most successful run came at Maderia in the late 90s.

 

Sounds like the new athletic director Tim Mosley and new principal Niederman did a good job finding someone so experienced so late in the game.

So I was mostly right.

 

First gig as head coach was at Madeira in 97 (surprised I remembered the year).

 

I thought he was at Sycamore, but it was Northwest (I really don't remember him there).

 

Then as the head coach at Fairfield.

 

Tim made a good name for himself as a coach in Cincinnati circles and was/is respected among many football people. He was one of the city's hottest young coaches (his name came up for a lot of jobs) while at Madeira.

 

Over the year's his resume leveled off (as with many coaches) and he was never able to have the success at Fairfield he (and every coach that goes there) envisioned. Tom Grippa couldn't turn the Indians around either.

 

I am surprised he pursued the Newport job. I'm not sure how close to retirement he is in Ohio, and he looks at this as a possible double-dipping thing. Unless he's retired in Ohio, I can't imagine he'll be in the building at Newport. In that case, the commute from Fairfield to Newport every day alone is a chore. I guess we'll see how that all plays out.

For Newport's sake hopefully he sticks for awhile. It looks as if Newport football is coming back, and some stability at the coaching position would go a long way to keep the team progressing. Last year they showed good strides in improving, (turnovers really hurt them in the regional final against Ncc), but have come a long way from just a few years back.

He better get busy they have a scrimmage against Dixie August 14th.

Any word on numbers at practice? I hope he has some bodies to work with.

Tim is a very good football coach. He has a lot of great experience and is a proven guy. This is a great hire for Newport. As HC at Indian Hill, we had some great battles with Coach Viox when he was at Madeira. Tim is an easy guy to get a long with. He has great perspective and the players will love him.
