AAU State Tournament

Featured Replies

I was out at Mt. zion yesterday and watched some AAU ball before my boys team played. I saw Joe Rice playing with a group called the Cougers. He was running the point and they were playing a team called the Lakers. He looked decent but a little too much showboat.... I almost asked someone where the COUGERS were from but didnt bother. I didnt recognize the team as a NKY squad and there were no other HOLMES players on that team that I recognized.

I am assuming you mean Greg Rice, and also I saw a team called the Cougars (red jerseys) with Duran Jefferson on it a few weeks ago, but I don't know it is the same team.

Correct, thanks. Greg Rice.....

He was running the point? That is interesting. Was his team particularly tall?

Not really that tall, they did have a big kid that resembled "Big Country" former OKA state player. They were not as skilled as their opponents but Rice made some dazzling moves. A lot of that scoop shot stuff in the lane.... those guys can hang so long it is amazing. It is obvious he can help a team.... I watched him pour in a ton of points against HHS this past year on dribble drives in the lane where he would pull up and drain it off a nice move. He is a nice player.

In the Boys 16 Division, I would think that the defending state champs, the N. Ky Hawks and Derek Smith All-Stars would be favorites. I don't know anything about pool 3 teams: Charlotte court, Quinn Anvils, and N. Ky Royals. Does anyone have any info?

Tournament Schedule:

http://www.playkba.com/06Boys16.htm

The word is Charlotte court has players such as Bud Mackey, Victor Moses, Aaron Boyd. Quinn Anvils athletic team out of L'ville. N.Ky Royals mostly kids from Dixie Highschool and another school up in N.Ky, small and scrappy. Higher Level kids from L'ville, several from Trinity. Livewire from Lex, couple of nice guards, one from Tates Creek.

N.Ky Hawks much different team w/o Arrez if that is the case. Derek Smith (mostly kids from Ky Lightning) 3 time state champs losing last yr to Hawks in a scrappy game, didn't get many good calls and Hawks were hungry. DS will be going for 4 out of 5 yrs w/ that group but will have some competition. DS definitely the favorite and anyone who knows this age group could not dispute that. They have only lost 2 games in 4 yrs to instate teams. Ironically both to Hawks, one yr on a half court shot to win and last yr. Should be a competitive tournament.

Yes Duran also plays with the Cougars. Rice has some nice moves and dribbles for his size...definetly a special player but needs to get his attitude and work ethic together. He can put thirty on you but also allow you to get 25 on him..only weakness in his game, but a major one...DEFENSE.

Anyone know who the Cardinals are in this weeks state?

Are they some Scott County kids?

The Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Camp will be doing the Officials this year. We lost about 5 teams that got mad and went to Franklin Co Team Camp this year and it seems to of been because of the poor officiating from the camp last year.

Yes, it is true that there were fewer officials last year due to another officials camp being held in Lexington at the same time. Facts of life when you have another camp with some big name D-one supervisors snooping around.

I have a friend that is an official and he is going to the camp this year. He told me that it was full, which last year they barely had half the numbers of campers needed to totally fiil the camp. So I would think that the officiating would be better, as people are people and I am sure they get tired just like the players do!

I think Haddix and Walls are playing for a Derek Smith 17's, but I'm not sure.

Haddix is playing for ds all stars I know, and will be one of the players to watch this weekend, Walls I think is playing for bluegrass stars, cardinals has to be a connection to scott county or south laurel, and south laurel has their southern heat team entered

Derek smith beat charlotte court

Derek smith east beat the Ky Cardinals 75-60

Central Ky Warriors beat Higher Level

Bluegrass stars made up of mostly Hazard and Scott county players beat

the the Shining Stars 75 to 71 in what I would consider an upset

look like its gonna be a good one!:thumb:

N Ky Royals 17u " kids from Scott, one from SK, HH, & Walton Verona " beat S ky Heat @ 10 in pool 3 play last night also good game

flyers got beat by quinn anvil in another fairly even battle

Just got off the phone with the guys at KBA in Lexington. They are changing the AAU 16/17 State Championship banner/logo to "Derek Smith Allstar Invitationals."

I heard there was a great Slam-Sunk Contest at the KBA last night, anybody witness it?
