Church burnings in the South

Featured Replies

You're right. Just by chance all 4 that were arson just happened to be black churches. Nope, not racially motivated at all.

I never said they were not racially motivated. I'm simply saying that labeling something as black, in this case the churches, does nothing to help the situation. Actually it is helping create more tension where it isn't deserved. Let's for a second assume the report that one of the burnings is an accident is accurate. Do you think there is any possible way you are going to be able to convince the black community that it wasn't racially motivated? I don't think so and I couldn't blame them.

So about 20 years ago in the community where I live the Catholic and Episcople churches both burned down in a span of about 3 months. I would guess that 99.99% of the congregation was white and I don't remember one person saying the white churches burned down.

According to the news two of those were caused by storms and another by accident. Sometimes by using labels we bring on attention that was warrented. By all means bring as much attention to the race issue as possible, it certainly isn't done enough.

Oh, I will. Continue making excuses though.

This happened in a span of a few days in multiple states. Actually, to keep avoiding the race issue is what upsets the black community.

Churches get targeted for arson at an unnatural rate regardless of the make up of the congregation. They also get targeted for burglary more than most other buildings as they are easy targets for both.

I absolutely think some of these fires over the last week are a result of Arsonist targeting those churches purely because of the make up of their congregation. I would hope that it is one group doing it and not a bunch of groups copy catting what they are seeing elsewhere. I also hope beyond hope that these turd burglars are caught ASAP.

Oh, I'm almost 50 years old and in my adult life we have never avoided the race issue. Yet, a segment of the black community has been upset 100% of that time. So constantly saying it's white against black isn't working to well.

If that's the case why keep making up excuses? It's not that hard to connect the dots. 4 black churches across multiple states got attacked.

Honestly, I have no idea what you are talking about. I'm not making excuses but we tend to jump to conclusions, throw gas on the fire, and then it's too late. Before, we start labeling things as black or white take a few minutes or hours to gather the facts. There is no way to know who is responsible or their motives at this point. Smart money is on it being racially motivated, I'll give you that but before it's reported as such let the authorities gather the facts.

At 9 am this morning did you know one of the fires was an accident? Most likely not but in your mind it was a racially motivated incident and that is a difficult emotion to reverse. Do you think the members of that community had the same emotions?

Yes, I did. I actually watch the news. Also as one person said this isn't court so innocence until proven guilty. But this isn't a court, this the court of my public opinion and I will continue to say this is racially motivated.

I just laugh at your notion that to "end" racism is to stop talking about it.

So, when Morgan Freeman said the same thing when asked about how to end racism, you would laugh at him also?

Laugh? No. Disagree? Yes. Because I would like to see if morgan freeman would apply that philosophy to these incidents.

Then why laugh at someones else with the same notion?

Judging, anyone?

Easy because I can. Are you seriously gonna get bent out of shape on a word that is on a forum that is talking about black churches getting burned?

Without looking at maps and doing calculations that sounds about right. It's about 600 miles from my house to Myrtle Beach so I'm guessing within 1000 miles works.

This is so disgusting...to deliberately burn down a church is just messed up. The problem is that if these 4 churches are so spread out (the four that appear to have been deliberately set), there are a lot of nut jobs (and copy cats) in a thousand mile radius. The arsonists could be very hard to catch.

By the way, I watch Fox predominantly and they have talked about it every morning this week...not wall to wall coverage...but covering it. My guess if people died in the fires, it would get more coverage. Also, it has been a pretty big week of news with the SCOTUS decisions.
