WKYT - Miranda Combs - Bryan Station High School

Saw this on Facebook, what is going on?

A wrote an email to Miranda Combs in response to the investigative report on Bryan Station a few days ago and never heard back. I thought I would post it here.

Hi Miranda,

My name is Drake Witt, and I am a proud Bryan Station High School Student. Frequently during the year, I and many other students feel like that we are bombarded by the media depicting our school as a dangerous place. Friends at other schools look at us a different way for going to Bryan Station, and we carry a negative stigma for going there. In reality Bryan Station is one of the best high schools in Lexington. Nowhere else can you find teachers who have so much experience, and deeply care for the students. I have been met with many opportunities to further my education and serve my community there. I was originally districted for Henry Clay High School. I decided to take a leap regardless of what others said and attend the Academy of Information Technology at Bryan Station High School. Attending the IT Academy was perhaps one of the best decisions I have ever made. The IT Academy is truly a hidden gem of Lexington that you don’t hear of much. I have been presented with so many opportunities because of it just in my first freshman year. Yet despite this, we have a negative image in the face of Lexington because of the poor choices of the few. I will agree that Bryan Station is far from perfect. The amount of violence that occurs is staggering, but what is forgotten is that this is “reported fights”. Ask any student at Tates Creek or Henry Clay how many fights broke out and it will be far from 4. These are the amount of fights that are actually documented, not the number that actually occur, which is what is more important. If anything this can display that Bryan Station is quick on organization and documentation. The parent that was interview in the story was talking about the fear for her child’s safety after she got in a fight. Very rarely does a fight ever occur that somebody gets randomly attacked. It always starts when people start mouthing off to each other, and tension rises. They don’t know how to blow of steam so they just take it out on each other. Other students find it “comedy” (as they would put it) and gather around to start recording to spread it on social media. It is a minority that that cycle occurs to at Bryan Station. The interview with the parent made it seem like that her student was out of the blue attacked, and victimized her. The majority of students are sick and tired of it happening. Stories presented on the media frighten Lexington and are a deterrent to possible incoming students, frightening them from pursuing a program at Bryan Station. When you have less higher achieving students wanting to go to Bryan Station, that is only going to worsen these problems. With all this investigative reporting, there is one detail that is constantly missed. The students. The whole point of the education system is for the students! “Its all about kids!” These articles never highlight how the students feel. There is never an interview of an actual student who attends there, and how they feel. The problems at Bryan Station affect students the most, so why are we ignoring them?

Sincerely,

Drake Witt

Lexington news is bad, they half but most of the stories they do. Didnt see this one but Im glad the student reached out.

Was Bryan Station the school named / implicated in the basketball story earlier in the year ? The one with the player who came out and alledged homophobic slurs in the handshake line ? (If it was not Bryan Station, then my apologies for thinking they were linked)

The implication was that it was Bryan Station but no one at Bryan Station knew anything about the situation and some of the allegations in that story seemed to have been embellished. The whole story was refuted by someone close to Bryan Station here on BGP.

Bryan Station is and always has been the castoff in Lexington high schools. The recent decision to change the school district boundaries is a sore spot in Lexington right now also.

I thought that was the case, unfounded. Agree that they have always been the castoff related to other schools in Lexington. In some cases, they (or their supporters) wear that badge of honor and confirm the suspicions, but I think you get that anywhere.

Yes. This is true.

The kid starts off saying they get a bad rap, it's not that bad at BS...then goes on to say how bad it is there. Kind is disproved his whole point.

Sounds a lot like what has happened in Bowling Green.

Sounds a lot like what has happened in Bowling Green.

You're referring to Warren Central?

You're referring to Warren Central?

Yes. People in Bowling Green are legitimately scared to send their kids to Warren Central.

Plus Warren Central got absolutely hatcheted in the last realignment of Warren County schools. It's awful.

That blows my mind too. Warren Central and BG were always the class of BG.

Had Bryan Station in a basketball scrimmage last night. For the record, all players polite, no trash talking and coach was good as well.

I think we should report on the good as well as the other things we see and hear.
