August 20, 201511 yr I agree with you totally but I have major concerns with the players they run out there everyday. It may take more than 1 or 2 new players in the lineup to help this team. My biggest concern with the existing lineup is their inability to put the ball in play on a regular basis. As much as I like the way Suarez swings the bat he still falls right there with a lot of the others in striking out nearly once a game. Look at these numbers and compare them to KC's hitters who are thought to be one of the best hitting units in baseball. Even Votto who has good overall numbers strikes out at a high rate. Just putting the ball in play especially with runners in scoring position makes a huge difference in scoring runs. So have Nelson Cruz and Paul Goldschmidt. Josh Donaldson, Ryan Braun, Matt Carpenter, Bryce Harper and Andrew MuCutchen are right there as well. The Reds are #21 in K's, or in other words 9 teams have struckout less than Reds hitters.
August 20, 201511 yr Author The Reds will be competitive in 2017 with a lineup built around Votto, Winker, Mesoraco, Suarez and Blandino. I think Winker and Blandino end up being very good MLB players. Frazier will still be around as well, he's streaky but still one of the better all around 3rd Baseman in the game. Barnhart will also be on the roster, he's a professional hitter and could end up starting with Mesoraco moving to a different position. There are Other high upside bats in the system that are sure to improve, the Reds have great draft position in the upcoming draft, free agency is always a possibility to acquire some bats to fill in or even some international guys. Some of the pitching depth could be flipped for bats, pitching is king.

But those are individuals on teams and the their teams super stars. Of those 8 guys you mentioned only 3 have a real shot at being in the playoffs and possibly 2 others. The others are on sub .500 teams. Trout, Braun and McCutcheon are having off years for them as far as averages go. The Reds have 4 guys in the meat of their order doing this every year. I know that baseball is more tolerant of the swing and miss guys these days, but they have to find players that can be sprinkled throughout the order that put the ball in play more regularly.
August 20, 201511 yr Author Barnhart stinks lets be real. He's a young Pena. There's nothing wrong with a young Pena. Barnhart is a great defensive catcher and he's a great receiver for pitchers behind the plate. He's got a great approach at the plate and he's a switch hitter. He's relatively young and cheap at 24 years old. Not every starting position player needs to be All Star caliber. Many teams have inquired on Barnhart, he must be doing something right. I'd have no problem batting him 8th and letting him handle the major load of the catching duties.
August 20, 201511 yr Author Antonio Santillan last night: 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 7 K. The Reds second round pick from this season has been impressive for an 18 year old. In 6 starts he's thrown 19 innings, 4 R, 10 BB, 17 K and opponents are hitting just .161 off of him. His ERA is 1.89 and the 4 runs he has given up all season have come in one outing.
August 20, 201511 yr Author Bryson Smith was promoted from Pensacola to Louisville to take his place of Lamarre. Phillip Ervin was promoted from Daytona to Pensacola to take the place of Smith. Carlton Daal placed on the DL for Daytona. He was hit by a pitch last night. Blake Trahan promoted from Billings to Daytona to take the place of Daal. It's a big jump for Trahan but one that I'm really excited about. If he could hold his own it could jump start him next season and fast track his path to the big leagues a little bit. He's got the plate discipline to succeed but jumping from rookie ball to A+ is no joke. Also excited to see if Ervin can get it going a bit in Pensacola, the Reds really need him to become the player that he has shown flashes of in the past especially with Hamilton struggling to figure it out.

August 21, 201511 yr Author Last night. Tim Adleman allowed a run in 7.1 innings with 3 walks and 6 strikeouts. He now has a 2.21 ERA in 134 innings which is very impressive. He's no longer a prospect at 27 years old but could be a bullpen guy or long man for the Reds in the future. Zack Weiss threw 1.2 shutout innings with a walk and 3 strikeouts. He picked up his 27th save in 28 opps. Batters are hitting .190 off of him. He has 80 K's to just 14 BB's in 56 IP. Tyler Stephenson went 2-5 with a double. It was his 13th Double, he is hitting .280 with a .361 OBP. Jacob Constante threw 5 shutout innings with 2 walks and 6 strikeouts. The 21 year old hard throwing lefty has given up just 2 ER over his last 16 innings with 17 K's. He's one of the Reds top pitching prospects that never gets talked about. Ian Kahaloa threw 4 hitless innings with a walk and 9 strikeouts. The 17 year old 5th Round pick has been lights out since being drafted just this season out of HS. He has a 2.70 ERA and 28 K's to just 6 BB's in 20 IP. Hitters are only batting .181 against him.

August 23, 201511 yr Author Jesse Winker returned to the Wahoos last night and continued his hot streak. He had been out several days with a sickness so bad that he was told not even to report to the clubhouse for games. In his return he went 2-5 with a run and 2 RBI. Phillip Ervin went 2-4 with a home run (13) and 2 RBI. This was his first AA HR. Jackson Stephens allowed a run in 7 innings with 8 strikeouts. This lowered his season ERA to 2.84. Dalton Carter went 3-3 with a double. The 20 year old Left Handed swinging OF'er is hitting .333 over his last 10 games with 2 HR's and 8 RBI.
