Since when are Highlands girls' teams called the "Ladybirds"? Is this an official change? Is "Bluebirds" no longer politically correct? Isn't "Bluebirds" gender neutral?

I use it interchangeably and dependent on the context it's being used.

i.e.

In the softball forum I'd be more like to call them the Birds or Bluebirds.

In a open social media post about a game I'll use Lady Bluebirds or Lady Birds, unless it's clearly a softball context.

 

Don't we do that with MOST of the mascots anymore as most mascots are generally masculine? Maybe there's a title 9 action in there somewhere

Congrats to the Pandas. Good luck down state. Talk about timely hits needed! The Pandas will have to play better defensively down state or it will be a very quick exit. Doesn't matter how good Haylee Smith is.....and she is that good!

 

I thought last night when Highlands had a 3-0 lead going into the 6 that this game may be done. Boy was I wrong. A couple of nice hits and some good old fashion small ball and it turned very quickly. Well done!

 

Learn from it Highlands and let's get this thing right. From when my daughter entered the program 4 years ago to now is something to be very proud of and something to build upon.

 

Would of loved to seen the entire Ladybird Softball program there last night supporting their future instead of a select few. That bothered me! I get that exams started today but sometimes there are some things you just have to make time for. Walking out of that park last night the 1 thing that stuck out to me and it made me feel proud of our program. We are no longer someone's doormat!

Couple of small things that stood out to me. I thought the Ladanyi RBI groundout 4-3 in the 7th was huge at the time and it was the difference. Just putting the ball on the ground to the right side at that time was big. Thought the play would have been to the plate but not sure infield was in at the time.

 

Then in the bottom with runners at second and third a bouncer was hit to right of third base. The third base player had to go to her left and extend and then stop her momentum to turn and make the throw. Its a play that should be made but it is not always made. At that moment, with pressure high, it was made. Those two small things could have turned this game had they not occurred the way they did. Of course, there are many others too in a close game, but those stood out to me at the time.

If Whitney Quillen got back to the plate (she was on deck) with the Birds still down that one run, I told the guys in the booth it would be gameover for the Pandas.......she was on FIRE all game long.

 

Just a great game by two great teams.

Since the Highlands mascot (bluebird) has both a male and female species, I would say Highlands already has a gender neutral mascot and the need to add "Lady" is redundant, especially in the softball world, where it's assumed we are speaking of the girls' team at the school.

 

Are Highlands faithful growing tired of "Bluebirds" as their mascot and looking to make a change? Are the girl's teams trying to build their own identity apart from their male counterparts?

 

Title IX assures that women's collegiate teams have the same opportunities as their men's counterparts. If the school was telling Highlands' girl's teams that they can NOT be called the Bluebirds, then that could be a title IX issue, if title IX existed at the HS level.

 

I disagree that most mascots are masculine. Any animal mascot is going to have a female of the species- Eagles, Panthers, Bulldogs, Cougars, Camels, Wildcats, etc. Even a Thoroughbred can be female. To me, don't see the need to put "Lady" in front of it in a female only sport. Can make the case for basketball to ease confusion.

I was told that Ryle was running the tourney this year. The Coach from Ryle did a great job of running things while coaching his team in the tournament, not to mention giving the eventual 9th Region Champs all they could handle.
