Deron Breeze to Adair County

Featured Replies

Deron Breeze who was previously at South Warren for one season has accepted the job at Adair Co.

Coach Breeze has been at quite a few schools since his debut as Bracken County's Coach. Any reason as to why he doesn't stick? Does he leave on his own accord?

Good question. I'm very intrigued to know why he would leave South Warren. Without knowing specifics of the pay rate at South Warren I would think that any coaching job at a South Warren is a pretty good job. That is a top notch school.

I know him better from the AAU circuit than at South Warren. He's an outstanding "X's and O's" coach, and kids seem to play hard for him. He will do an outstanding job at Adair County, IMO. He already has some connections there from the (AAU) past.

While I think they are so very close to breaking through, boys basketball is likely to remain the one sport that they will find difficulty excelling at. Neither Bowling Green or Warren Central are slowing down in it (it being the one sport that Central should maintain in), and South will typically find themselves in 3rd place or worse. I see their situation as that of Greenwood for much of their existence. Moments in the sun, often behind the others.

How is Adair(basketball-wise, size-wise,etc.), just seems like a huge step down. Have heard nothing but good things about South Warren, seems like a primo job.

Size-wise, they're a 3A school, so decently smaller than South Warren in terms of size. Basketball-wise, they have regressed the past couple of years, but won the 5th Region back in 08/09. They typically make the 5th Region tournament. They were a very young team last year, and lost only three seniors. Provided neither were lost to transfer (Adair's best player would've been Kel Stotts the past two years, who transferred to Russell County after playing varsity for Adair in the 8th grade), Adair returns two of their top three scorers, who will be entering their sophomore and junior years. I wish I knew about the facilities or pay. Facilities are top notch at South Warren. I've always heard the compensation package for every Warren County school was abysmal in basically every sport.

But again, as far as it being a primo job, I believe their ceiling is capped. I don't think they'll ever be a school that will reel off multiple region titles in a short span, and quite frankly, there isn't a school in the 4th Region that doesn't live in the shadow of Bowling Green and Warren Central. And it's even worse for South Warren given that they're in the district with them. They will almost always have to go through one of those two teams to reach the region tournament (only once in the 5 seasons they've existed has there been a time they wouldn't have had to), and they've never beaten either in a regular season or postseason game. Comparative to a lot of schools around, South Warren is a great job. But when you consider their situation, postseason success will be so tough to come by. I don't think it's a stretch to say that Adair presents a much clearer path in that regard and I wouldn't be surprised if the compensation is better too.

All that aside, and this is pure hearsay and speculation, there were a lot of people that talked openly about not liking him and feeling like he may not last at South Warren. That was never spoken to me by anyone of any influence of the situation, but it is an open secret that he was not the first choice for head coach when the vacancy came open. Additionally, the Spartans were expected to be significantly better than the 14-15 record they turned in. Prior to the year, that team had the look of one that might finally get to the region tournament. They were hosting district at home, had a lot of returning players from a team that fell just short against Warren Central the year before - and they were SLAUGHTERED by Bowling Green. I would not be surprised if Breeze read some tea leaves, saw that maybe this wasn't a fit for either side, and took an opportunity. Or perhaps he was pointed in that direction. Again, pure hearsay, but plausible.

When I coached in the 4th region I thought it made more sense to move South Warren to the district with Logan County, Franklin Simpson and Russellville while sending Todd back to the 2nd region.

Where's he from originally? Isn't he from Adair co?

If the state ever gets serious about correcting the districting problem in the west, that may happen. The fit is definitely there. And South Warren would desperately love that I'd imagine. All the perks of being a Bowling Green area school without having to deal with the rest of the district.

The question is will his talented 8th grader Walker be going with him. I would assume he would be.

I wouldn't bet on Walker playing in this state next year.

I was told he's already gone back to Chicago.

I was thinking that this was the original plan. Didn't his dad make a statement that they were only coming here for one season?

I'd heard the same, but wasn't confident enough to step out on it!

He did initially, then they backtracked on it, probably as a cover. 8th graders can't play varsity ball in Illinois, so moving here was natural so he could play varsity. It was reported he'd be returning, but in an interview his father said - "I plan on having Marquise at South Warren High School, and he'll be there for his ninth-grade year," Chikosi Walker said. "That's been the plan from day one. ... I never said I was coming back to Chicago for ninth grade."
