Class of 2018----Best Freshmen in Kentucky---Varsity Players

Featured Replies

The current best of the Class of 2018.......that play varsity

Let me start with Blaine Gillim from Ohio Co. Bats and Hits--Left. The numbers don't lie on this kid....Hitting .359 in 78 AB with 9 doubles, 2 triples, and 27 RBI. His On-base percentage is .458 and slugging percentage is .525.

That's not all....Gillim also pitches. At 5-2 in 26.2 innings, he has destroyed opposing hitters...with 53 strikeouts. The opposition has a batting average of .088. The fastball is low 80"s consistent and can get to 84-85. Thee curve ball is hard and sharp. Other pitches are in the developing stage.

Oh, by the way, he also flashes the leather having made only 2 errors at the varsity level in three years. And he has decent speed on the bases. He is a five tool player....don't believe me, come take a look

Awesome numbers!! Great job Blaine!

Alex Kennedy from Cov Cath. He has done a great job catching for them this year.

AK has shown signs of being very good for another 3 years behind the plate.

Greenup Co has 2 very good Freshmen in Gage Hughes and Kyle Gammons. They play SS and 2B respectively so the middle infield for GC will be solid for the next 3 years. Both have great range, only a handful of errors each and well above average arms for Freshmen.

Gammons hits in the lead off spot. He hits the ball well to all fields, has a very high on-base percentage and has tremendous speed with several stolen bases and runs scored. Hughes bats in the 3 spot, he's a switch hitter, has a high batting average (upper .300's), leads the team in RBI's and rarely strikes out.

Gammons also has become a go to guy late in games as a closer for GC. I believe he finished regular season with a 4-0 record with 4 saves this year. Hughes hasn't pitched much this year but when he has he's done well also with a low to mid 80's fastball.

Keep an eye out on these two in the near future as they are both having a lot of success as Freshmen while playing one of the toughest schedules of any team in the state.

Not sure how much varsity time he got this year but I finally got the chance to watch him a few times. Really good defensive catcher. Strong kid. Strong arm. Nice hitter.

Not sure who the varsity catcher is now but I would expect to see AK behind the plate next year.

Daniel McWhorter of Calvary Christian has to be considered.

He finished the regular season throwing 37 innings with 54 k's to only 12 walks. He went 5-2 with a 2.27 and a 1.22 WHIP. 4 of his 5 wins were complete games and he also has 3 shutouts.

He hit .587 on the year with a .662 OBP and a .778 slugging percentage. He also led the team with 36 RBI and 31 stolen bases. He drove in all of those runs for a team that only won 8 games, so it's not like they were a powerhouse either. In 77 plate appearances the kid struck out 5 times.

He can really get it done!

No fault to this young man, but it is hard to considered all of these stats when the best team Calvary faced all year was Ludlow and they run ruled Calvary. Bring him to Beechwood... this in not a recruitment just an example. (wink)

The second baseman for Bourbon County is a freshman I think. Bats 2nd and plays second so he must be pretty good. Saw him play against Bishop and Covington Holy Cross.

Awesome numbers!!!!

The question I have however is, he is only a Freshman but played for Varsity 3 years already? Is the talent that far down at Ohio Co.? Not a slight on the kid, the numbers speak for themselves, but what is the talent level at that school and what is the talent level for the competition they play? Just curious.

Excellent question. Ohio Co is actually very talented with 4 seniors who have signed to play college baseball....WKU, KWC, Brescia, and Berea. They won 18 games last year and are 21-9 this year heading into the tournament.

The competition is in the very tough 3rd Region with 6 teams who have won over 20 games this year. The Gillim kid is just one of those rare kids that come along with once in awhile with excelleent skills at am young age.

He is a straight-up prospect.....a no-doubt D-1 prospect or better....and he is really a good kid and student. We like him here for sure.

5-2 in 26 ins, with 53 k`s . that's 2k`s a inning. Is that a typo? 5-2 is 7 games would be 49 innings, not counting 10 run rule. Not saying I don't believe this, but the numbers just don't look right. Why I ask if typo. A .088 era and 2k`s a inning , would think he would have more innings. Hope the kid keeps it up. May Greenup Co and Ohio Co will meet up or play in a tourney sometime. Would be some good young talent.

Cameron Langston from McCracken County will be one to watch. Hard to get much playing time on this roster especially at SS with Womack (WKU) in front. He is very smooth, good arm, and has produced at the plate in spot starts.

Cov Cath has 3 2018 grads that should make a big impact in 2016...Kennedy, Maile, and Mayer. Krumps should be giddy with excitement about what he has coming up next season. A lot of returning juniors, a couple of sophomores that will contribute and a really nice young crop.
