June Basketball

I think. I have herd Coach Cal, say his teams played like it was an AAU game. And it wasn't in a good way. Its all about me, and not the team. The post above says it all, for me.

Nope. Lucky to have some really great AAU coaches. Not saying that they were all great over the years but for the most part, excellent experience. Two of them were top flight guys that could out x/o just about anybody around.

AAU is a high school recruiting mechanism. Since HS coaches are now allowed to coach their players, we've seen more and more kids transferring to play with their AAU ballers.

In my experience, coaching was better in AAU than in HS basketball.

There are some very good AAU coaches at the top tiers and the higher you go on the grade levels. I don't doubt that at all. I would imagine that the median high school basketball coach is much better than the median AAU coach (unless that AAU coach is a high school assistant or former high school coach, something like that).

Lots of people who don't know the game at all are in AAU and think that latching onto kids are going to get them a high school job. You can definitely look at some of them and tell that they didn't play themselves.

I'll add to this by saying there are also AAU coaches using AAU to further their coaching careers as well. As much as the college coaches come to watch the players there are also coaches hoping to be seen by college coaches as well.

Nobody is making kids play school basketball in June and nobody is making AAU teams not compete in June. Tell your favorite AAU team to host a tournament in June and make the kids choose which one is more important to them. AAU is good for one thing: exposure. If you aren't good enough to play D-1(which ironically is 99.8% of our KY kids) then AAU is a colossal waste of time and money. It's not about making the kids better individual players it's about being able to brag about which program spits out more top notch talent. AAU helps some talent achieve but overall it ruins the game of basketball and is the reason basketball sucks at all levels these days.

All the talking heads in basketball say we are headed to club basketball anyways. Jump start it and fire the first shot. Get the ball rolling and get club basketball on its way. :thumb:

I will never understand why parents send their kids to AAU when the odds and percentages favor baseball and football for scholarships(especially pitching in baseball). Unless your kid is a known high D1 candidate, why not groom them towards team sports that have more than 5 starters?(football and baseball). Like you stated 98% of KY kids aren't talented enough to play D1.

I think people would be surprised at how hard it is and how good you have to be to get a full scholarship for baseball. You damn near have to turn down the MLB in order to get a full ride in baseball.

I would argue that 98 % of high school coaches can coach circles around AAU coaches. That being said top tier AAU programs do have good coaches.

Agree 100%. :thumb:

Think you opened a can of worms. Here at Trimble basketball is all they care about.

Baseball/softball scholarship money VERY hard to get. At D1 level, each school allowed 11.7 scholarships for baseball, and 12 for softball. And, in baseball if a school gives a kid any baseball money at all, they have to give at least 25%. Huge majority of kids getting partial scholarships and several not getting any at all.

Those are all good points, though I would still say the odds are far better for baseball and football scholarships. But lets throw scholarships and college completely out of the window. Don't MLB have like 40 rounds of draft choices, get yourself a contract out of high school and even if you never play a game in the Show, you can make a pretty good living in the minors, travel and just play baseball for a living(Bull Durham). I love basketball too, not nearly as much as football, but more than baseball. Colleges and scouts will find you, just explore your options

It's still not that easy.
