Looking at the list of kids who have signed already in the 2015 class.

 

I cannot remember a better class of basketball players in Kentucky from top to bottom. Lots of D1, D2 and NAIA kids getting their college paid for and lots of D3 kids playing at the next level.

 

My question is this: Can you name a better overall class than 2015? If so, what year(s) and who were the top players that year?

2015 has been a tremendous year for recruits from KY

I wouldn't say "a better class" but 2008 was pretty good.

 

Scotty Hopson - Tennessee --- NBA

Darius Miller - Kentucky --- NBA

Shalvin Mack - Butler --- NBA

Jordan Smart - Vandy

Taylor Stewart - Air Force

Tyshawn Edmondon - St. John's

Lots more but that's some I remember and I know that signed.

 

But again I don't know if I would say better.

Before I started doing this, but I believe 2011 was one of the better years recently and had like 20 kids end up with D1 offers? Could be wrong on that number though

2010 class was pretty good:

Josh Sewell- Miami (OH)

Ge'Lawn Guyn- Cincinnati

Dakotah Euton- Kent State (Originally committed to UK, obviously didn't pan out)

Chad Jackson- James Madison to NKU

Aaron Watts- I believe chose Morehead for baseball over Marshall for hoops??

Elijah Justice- Louisville

Curtis Washington- Cal

Jarrod Polson- UK

Colt Barnhill- Air Force

Donovan Gibbs- IUPUI

Vance Hall- Wright State

Faulkner twin- Radford

 

2011 class was really good too:

 

Anthony Hickey- Oklahoma St to LSU

CHris Freeman- Austin Peay

George Fant- WKU

Vinny Zollo- Cleveland St

Jordan Shanklin- IUPUI

Lyonel Gaines- IUPUI

Remy Abel- Indiana to Xavier

Donovan Kater- Manhattan

Jordan Percell- Morehead

Timmy Knipp- EKU

Kam Woods- Butler

Ryan Taylor- Marshall

Treg Setty- So Illinois(??)

Marcellus Barksdale- IUPUI

Devante Parker- Louisville (football..I believe had some hoop offers as well?)

 

Those were the first two classes that I really followed and covered as far as recruiting goes.

 

Really wish the Travelers and EYBL were in KY back then.

Bud Mackey was the best player in the class but never made it to college (signed with Indiana) either but they say he is looking to make a comeback soon. Charlie givens says that Bud Mackey has never been better and will be released soon.

Pretty sure the Bud Mackey ship has sailed. He was special to watch. Just couldn't keep his head on straight. Certainly was given enough opportunities. How old is he now?

I like this class, particularly the fact that it has some quality size, but (and I'm about to show my age) I think consideration should be given to the class of 1974, which included:

 

Jack "Goose" Givens (Lexington Bryan Station/UK/NBA)

James Lee (Lexington Henry Clay/UK)

Kenny Higgs (Owensboro/LSU/NBA)

Robert Miller (Louisville Central/Cincinnati/NBA (six seasons))

Rick Wilson (Louisville Atherton/Louisville/NBA)

Bob Lindsay (Louisville Ballard/Florida)

2001 always comes to me as the top year:

Brandon Bender - Louisville

Carlos Hurt - Louisville

Larry O'Bannon - Louisville

Patrick Sparks - WKU/UK

Josh Carrier - UK

Adam Chiles - UK

Ronnie Dawn - Marshall

Michael Haney - EKU

 

I don't remember who all else from that class went D1, but I remember those 8 all being big time high school players.

Unfortunately things didn't pan out all that well for a lot of them.

That class also had:

Also had Josh Terry who played juco then went on to have a great 2 years at Austin Peay

2001 Coric Riggs - UL / Weber State

That 2011 class was really good. Especially at the D1 level. George Fant probably scored 1500 points for WKU. Hickey started all 4 years at two different power conference schools(LSU&OK St). Kam Woods led the Big East in rebounding two straight years. Remy Abell starts for Xavier and has 2 years remaining. Chane Behanan led U of L to a title. 2008 had 3 kids(Hopson,Miller,&Mack) who have played games in the NBA.

Forgot to mention Tyler Brown (Illinois St) was in that 2008 class too. He played in the D-League. He also led KY to the last win against the Indiana All-Stars at the Lville Gardens if my memory is correct. Brock Moorman(Owensboro class of 08) played for North Carolina A&T. I believe a kid from Ft. Thomas Highlands also went to A&T.

That very solid 2001 class also had Brian Thornton(Lville Manual;Vandy/Xavier),Lamar Owen(Owensboro;Southern Illinois),Dewalt(Bowling Green;EKU),& Wardlowe(Bowling Green;Southern University). There was a kid from Barren County,I believe,who played on the KY All Star team then played D1 on the west coast.
