Well this could be a game changer. While this may not exactly fit the definition of what we all think of as a Warp Speed, it does seem as if NASA is onto something. Cutting a trip to the moon to 4 hours or a 10,000 year trip to Alpha Centauri to around 100 years is a huge step in the evolution of space travel.

 

Looking forward to seeing more about this.

HOW DOES AN EMDRIVE WORK?

 

The concept of an EmDrive engine is relatively simple. It provides thrust to a spacecraft by bouncing microwaves around in a closed container.

 

Solar energy provides the electricity to power the microwaves, which means that no propellant is needed.

 

Researchers previously believed this wouldn't work in the vacuum of space, but Nasa has allegedly shown otherwise.

 

The implications for this could be huge. For instance, current satellites could be half the size they are today without the need to carry fuel.

 

Humans could also travel further into space, generating their own propulsion on the way.

Almost got me excited there. In typical Daily Mail fashion, they used a completely unreasonable headline to sound cool.

 

EM Drives are certainly neat, but they are not warp drives, which literally warp the space around them to shorten the trip between two points in space.

 

I'm interested, but not extremely interested.

My first thought was what are the possibilities for use on earth?

On a side note I was just watching something on using small nuclear detonations to propel a spaceship that would theoretically accelerate it faster than the EMDrive described above.

That's why I put Warp Drive in " " marks!!! Yet the story does say that it could move faster than light which in fact would be warp speed.

NASA is currently studying the technology for future applications, but few expected anything like this to happen: according to a post over at the NASA Space Flight forums, when a team of researchers fired lasers into the resonance chamber, the particles were accelerated to astronomical speeds...with some moving even faster than the speed of light.

 

"...this signature (the interference pattern) on the EmDrive looks just like what a warp bubble looks like. And the math behind the warp bubble apparently matches the interference pattern found in the EmDrive."

 

So, what does this mean? Well, it's entirely possible that NASA just created a 'warp bubble,' - while that sounds like something out a bad episode of Star Trek, it could also lead to a huge advancement in space travel technology. Traveling the distance between Earth and our neighboring planet Mars is still a one-way trip using conventional methods, but if the EmDrive were able to create something like a stable warp bubble and faster-than-light travel became a reality, that may no longer be the case.
