Officer Runs Over Suspect

Featured Replies

What a wild video. I am not sure what the protocol is for that. Suspect refused to give up weapon and shot it randomly. Definately a danger to innocents.

I would think that call would have to be made by a supervisor though.

Would it have been OK if they shot him under these circumstances? If so, then it's OK to hit him with a car.

Hitting him with the car was probably safer than stopping and exiting the car to try to shoot him.

I truly have no idea what to think. It may be justified or it could be just stupid. Obviously, more details are needed.

I don't think a shot by the officer would have been reasonable at that point.

"This was a dangerous felon who'd been on a crime spree throughout the morning," Marana Police Sgt. Chris Warren told KOLD-TV in February. "He'd just stolen a weapon, loaded it, was not obeying commands from officers and was walking toward occupied businesses. It's a busy time of morning, a lot of employees at work, a lot getting ready to come out for breaks, he's walking toward those businesses. So we had to take immediate action and make sure he didn't get inside those businesses."

If what the Chief said is true, they had every reason to stop him by any means necessary. If they let him walk into one of those businesses and kill someone, I have a feeling people would have MMQBd that decision also.

He'd already fired the weapon once...how far should they let him go?

They should shoot him as soon as he moves his arm AT ALL to raise the gun. There was no indication that was imminent. You just can't shoot people because of what they have done. You have to base it on what they are doing or about to do.

You miss the part about him walking towards several businesses, and a police officer, refusing to stop or drop the gun?

He's stolen a gun, stolen a car, fired at least one round in the video...

The police don't have to wait for him to raise the gun imo. At that point it is too late and an officer or innocent bystander could be dead. If he wasn't moving that's one thing...but he was moving towards people and wasn't stopping.

Clyde, by your logic if he never raises the gun are you going to let him walk into a business with the gun?

Come on.

They had police in front of him and behind him. At some point he either gives up or makes a move that gets him killed.

And he can't go the side? He's refusing to stop, and walking right at an officer...how long do they have to wait? Until someone gets shot?

He's been given opportunities to stop...

How many times are you asking him to stop if he's walking at you with a gun he's already fired?

My life is now better after watching that, OMG, dont play with guns son is all I can say.

It might not have been textbook but the guy should be thankful he's alive. If he'd have kept going with that gun he wouldn't be.

I have no problem with the officer using his car to stop the suspect. But damn he flat plowed him over, and went through a brick wall. He must have thought he was taking out Jimmie Johnson.

Well, that is one way to make a suspect give themselves up...
