Interesting view of College Basketball

Featured Replies

From Collin Sherwin of Voodoo Five....

"I've never watched as little college basketball as I have this season. The game is poorly coached, often lacks any flow or beauty, rewards unathletic play, and is as uninteresting as at any point I can remember. I watch USF and the AAC due to this website, Kentucky... and that's about it. I didn't enter The Jerome this year because it would be throwing darts with as little ball as I've seen.

And that would be one thing if I was a casual follower of the game, but five years ago I would have told you college basketball is unquestionably my favorite sport. I grew up a rabid Villanova/Big East fan, have been to 11 of these buildings, and have this weird fetish for the West Coast Conference that's simply bizarre for a Floridian. But I've checked out on the sport more than ever. And if they've lost me, they're in trouble."

His suggestions here ...

I Love You College Basketball, But You Suck Right Now. Let's Change Some Things

I've heard similar thoughts coming from other corners. Certainly food for thought.

That said, I have no idea who Sherwin is, so for him to make a blanket statement like the game is poorly coached is ludicrous. He kind of lost me after that, so I didn't even bother to read the link provided. Guy obviously thinks he knows a lot more than he does.

I.m not certain about the coaching comment, but I also have reduced my watching significantly. An endless procession of missed shots and fouls.

The best coaches do not often have the best teams.

The game is not good right now, and I disagree with one point of the authors, un-athletic play is not rewarded, it is often punished.

There are way to many timeouts and you shouldn't take them away from coaches. It hurts the team people like to watch, like the old Arkansas, Kentucky, and etc. team that pressed and got after it.

I don't know if it's so much poorly coached as it is over-coached.

It's one of the reasons I don't understand clamoring for the shorter shot clock. It just means more possessions with a bad shot. Might give us a couple points per game... maybe.

My opinion: concentrating on calling hand-checks to try and clean up the perimeter was pointless. You want to increase scoring and open the game up? Clean up the lane first. It's a free-for-all down there in most college games. Guys get fouled on nearly every shot close to the basket. Heck, Terry Rozier got hit in the face on a layup against NC State last weekend and nobody even saw it.

Clean up the lane.

*And for safety's sake, stop allowing wrestling matches during loose balls.

Coaching needs to be done in practice and then let the players execute in games. Too many coaches try to do to much in games. Let em play. Also, the game itself is bad. The way it is played now makes it not enjoyable for the fans. Way to much contact in the game. That is why there is no flow!

You nailed it.

More terrible shots at the end of the clock.

Get rid of charges.

Exactly. Want to know why the 24-second clock works so well in the NBA? Because there are 10 guys on the floor and every last one of them can hit shots.

Get rid of charges.

Another one that should just be done away with for safety's sake. There should be no incentive to step under a guy on his way to the basket.

Love it when a player takes a charge.
