I don't see a difference. Crack is illegal, mom and dad are addicts, it's going to be left around for Jr. to get ahold of. Crack is legal, mom and dad are still addicts, it's still going to be left around for Jr. to get ahold of. Where's the difference?

I know what I deal with and I know continued leniency and multiple trips to rehab don't work for most addicts. Again, the person has to want to change, most don't.

The way we currently address it I couldn't agree more. Portugal completely changed how they handle treatment and rehab. I gotta get out for awhile but later I'll look for a good resource addressing that.

 

But that's my point, instead of loading money onto a sinking ship how about we take some of that money and buy a brand new boat?

 

If you refer to one of the first articles I posted on this where Branson discusses his thoughts it has links and figures on what the US is spending on the War on Drugs. The only thing it has gotten us is the highest rate of drug abuse and the most people locked up for drug-related crimes. I can't understand how anyone thinks that is working...

I get what your saying I really do, but changing the law isn't going lower the abuse rate. I unfortunately have know many that have got involved with drugs...those that really wanted help were able to recover. Those that didn't no amount of rehab ever worked for them.

 

I think rehab should be available to anyone that wants or needs it, but far too many are not interested in recovery. they just go through the motions to stay out of jail temporarily.

Not picking on anyone on here, so please don't take it that way. But, I would be willing to bet that most of the "Legalize Drugs" crowd on this board do not have children. Just saying that being a parent really makes you view the world a little differently.

Pot isnt even a physically dependent drug. They might as legalize it and set up some ways to make money on it.

You make it legal, more people will say, "Hey, must not be that bad, they made it legal". More people try it, more kids exposed to it.

If you think the only reason we have the highest rate of drug abuse it because of the amount of money we spend on fighting drugs, I really don't know what else to say.

 

Again, I have no problem with criminals being locked up for committing crime. Should we make all crime legal?

 

I'll ask you again, what makes someone breaking the law for illegal drug use any different from someone that steals a car. Both are crimes. What makes the one breaking the law for illegal drug use special?

 

Exact same situation. My guy wouldn't rat out where he bought the drugs he had on him so they pinned him with trafficking. Just a stupid decision - bought pain pills for his bad back instead of going to the doctor and getting them legally. No previous record. Never been in trouble. Not a methhead or heroin addict; just a kid with constant pain in his back looking for relief.

 

Doctors used to give away pills like candy, why couldn't he get them legally?

I will agree the war on drugs isn't working. I can see some value in legalizing some drugs...but to legalize some of the horribly addictive and dangerous stuff like heroin, crack etc, just doesn't seem like a good idea. Even if legalizing it gives us a little more control over it's distribution and potency. There's no such thing as a recreational heroin user. To make something like that readily available to everyone is inviting trouble. And I get that it's readily available right now for those that want it.

And there's the difference. You think that'll be the case, I don't think it'll happen.

 

Will the number of drug users increase? Probably so, but I think it'll be a very minimal insignificant number. You think it'll increase a lot. Just a difference of opinions.

I have kids and I am in the legalize it crowd. Whether drugs are legal or not it is up to parents to educate and monitor our kids. The legality of drugs shouldn't change that. Alcohol is just as bad as a lot of the drugs that people abuse today.

Sorry, but to compare alcohol to meth, heroin, etc...........is a bit shortsighted in my opinion.
