April 2, 201511 yr Even if drugs are made legal, companies can still require drug tests for employment. The increase in drug users will not jump in the way you're assuming IMO. You completely missed my point. My point is legalizing drugs doesn't solve the how can drug addicts afford them problem? Drug addicts aren't going to be holding down jobs, so even with cheaper legal drugs they will still have to commit crimes to be able to afford them.

Drug addicts aren't going to be holding down jobs, so even with cheaper legal drugs they will still have to commit crimes to be able to afford them. I'm not missing your point at all. You're missing the point. If there isn't a substantial increase in drug use (which I don't believe there would be) than those who are using, are the same ones that already are using. If these people can't afford it now, those crimes are already being committed. If that's the case, where is this giant increase in crime you're predicting coming from?

You don't think if made easily accessible there wouldn't be more weekend and recreational use of drugs than there is today? OK we will just disagree on this. Our city recently went from dry to wet...a good friend who rarely drank before drinks all of the time now. I asked him what changed, he said I don't have to drive 50 miles to get beer...I just go to the gas station now when I run out. Making it available has definitely led him to drink more than he was or would have before. I think making all drugs available would have the same impact on people. He never had the interest in sneaking around and paying high prices from a bootlegger, so he just didn't drink a lot.
April 2, 201511 yr All legalizing drugs does is make the end product of drug use legal, it doesn't solve all of the other problems related to drug use...that is my only point here.
April 2, 201511 yr Author You were talking about ALL Illicit drugs not just Marijuana. Marijuana is much different than Heroin, Cocaine, Oxy, Meth and other illicit drugs. Even if prices drop on Heroin, how many Heroin users you think are able to hold a job and afford cheaper Heroin? As said earlier it is the most addictive drug out there, you don't use Heroin recreationally and just walk away.I was just using marijuana as an example of a drug that could definitely see a price drop just because it can be easily grown. No doubt on the addictive properties of heroin. But I do know that we probably haven't even begun to tap what could happen in that respect if even 10% of the money we throw at the War on Drugs currently is utilized for treatment, education, and the like...
April 2, 201511 yr Author All legalizing drugs does is make the end product of drug use legal, it doesn't solve all of the other problems related to drug use...that is my only point here. That is correct. There will still be problems just like there are still problems associated with drinking. My point is, the current method of fighting those problems isn't working and it seems foolish for us to continue going down that path. It's time to move past the taboo and start looking at other solutions. I have offered up one here --- I don't see anyone on the other side offering up any...

All the treatment, education, etc. will not work unless the addict wants it to. You can live in your Utopian mindset that legalizing all illicit drugs will take care of the problem. It won't. It will just make them that much more available, especially to our children. To me, that is completely unacceptable.

To continually do the same failed strategy after years of complete and total failure is absurd.
April 2, 201511 yr The current strategy isn't working either. It's just flushing millions upon millions of dollars down the drain every month. To continually do the same failed strategy after years of complete and total failure is absurd. So do you advocate making all illicit drugs legal? Making them more available to my children and yours? I'll state again, that is completely unacceptable in a society. If you think the drug problem is bad now, just do that and watch the explosion that makes today's problems look like a picnic. While the current war on drugs may not be working perfectly, it works better than no laws at all.

If you want to kill yourself, go for it. Why would they be available to children? Legalize it, regulate it (much like alcohol), and tax it. Once again, companies would still require drug testing. Most, if not all, employers are going to want their workforce drug free. If people want to maintain employment, they'll refrain from using even if they're legal. You think drug use will explode, I think that's nothing more than fear-mongering. It's cool, we simply disagree. Who said no laws at all? I know I didn't.

It's cool, we simply disagree. Who said no laws at all? I know I didn't. Fear mongering? It's a fact. Like I said, come work with me for a week. Most have no clue how bad the problem is. Our kids are getting drugs now. If they are more prevelant, they will be easier for them to get. Like JD said, the crimes associated with drug use ie: burglary, shop lifting, assault, domestic violence are bad now. Another very sad affect of drug use are the children going into foster care due to the parents being addicted. An addicts use affects more than just themselves.

But I also don't want to spend tax money on rehab because some moron makes bad decisions. I'm a realist and as I said earlier legalize it and let the morons commit crimes arrest them or kill each other off. But I'm not spending tax money on something that doesn't work.

Not sure your a realist if you think they will just commit crimes and get arrested and everything will be fine. Great plan if they would only commit crimes against one another, unfortunately we both know that's not what would happen. Lots of innocent people already getting hurt by drug abuse, under your plan even more innocents would be victims of crime.

And your head is firmly planted in the sand if you don't think illicit drugs aren't readily available to our kids right now. Liquor stores ID, drug dealers don't... I deal with it every day. My head is far from planted in the sand. I said making them legal would make them even easier to get for our kids. Heroin is far from alcohol. As someone else in this thread said, until you stop equating hard drugs to alcohol, there is no reason to continue this discussion. I'm for legalizing marijuana. To legalize the likes of heroin, meth, etc. is ludicrous.
