March 26, 201511 yr I just really don't get the hatred for Phillips. Aside from Votto, he's the most versatile hitter on the team. And the ONLY one, again besides Votto, who seems to come to plate with a plan depending on the situation at hand. He's done well at 1,2,3,4,and 7 in the lineup. All while playing close to GG caliber defense. I think BP is a more integral part of this teams success than many realize. Because he's a bastard? Just tossing it out there.

His defensive numbers are the only thing keeping Phillips from providing no value at all to the Reds. And w/ that, his WAR over the past have been 2.6 and 1.7....so maybe he should try and listen to the analytics guys and at least get his OBP to a league average level

You can't possibly compare him just to other positions offensively. Who b bats before and after him and in what spot in the lineup affect that drastically. I would move to see him in the 2 or 6 hole for this team and just left alone and was steady everyday there. I guarantee you we'd see a 270ish average with 15 HR and GG caliber D. Wouldn't we all take that?? I would.

March 27, 201511 yr Where a guy bats shouldn't impact their OBP IMO.Completely disagree. And this goes back to my point about him. He is one of the only Reds who comes to the plate with a plan. You can tell when he's trying to go backside or hit that SAC fly or whatever the case may be. He sacrifices his numbers to try to shoot one to right all the time. May not be successful but he's not Jay Bruce trying to power one through a 9 man shift b/c he has to pull the ball. And that's a very underrated part of his game.

March 27, 201511 yr In the FanGraphs glossary entry for on-base percentage, the rule of thumb for an average OBP is listed as .320. With a .319 career OBP, Phillips is basically right at that average mark. And that is a touch unfair to him. During his time in Cleveland, before he put it all together, he logged a paltry .246 OBP in 462 plate appearances. In his time in Cincy, his OBP has been .325, just a shade over average. He has had an OBP above league average in three of his nine seasons in Cincy. Last season, when he posted a paltry .306 OBP — his worst in his nine years in Cincy — it was still better than the average National League second baseman.
