Covington Catholic 64 Campbell County 43 (Sweet 16 First Round)

CovCath is a quality team and played a great game. CVH had a great game. Cooper T. played a great supporting role. Hats off to CovCath for moving on. Knowing all of the kids from Campbell personally, there is no question they have heart and talent, and for anybody that actually saw them play in the District and Regional tournament, that was on full display. Yes I picked the Camels to win and thought they would be right there. It just didn't happen. Going 2-14 from three didn't help, but the Camels just didn't play well in the 2nd and 3rd quarter. Give CovCath some credit for that too. Good luck to CovCath for moving on. The Camels had a great season and have nothing to hang their heads about. And for those Camel "supporters" that want to bash the kids, coaches, or program the Camels will be fine without you.

I really think the week off between the regionals and last night's game went a long way in rejuvenating the Colonels. This also gave them a full week to prepare for the Camels.

Basketball teams like race horses have form cycles. CovCath was one made free-throw away from extinction at the hands of Newport. They stuggled for three quarters with St. Henry, and they were coming off of a thumping by Dixie Heights.

Based on what everyone saw in both Campbell's District and Regional performances, where they did tiptoe through the minefield without having to play the really heavy timber in Mason County or Harrison County (who could have been a matchup nightmare for them), I do believe that the Camels would have dispatched Newport and St. Henry more handily than did the Colonels.

With that being said, that was then and this is now, and as we all know comparative score theories are a recipe for disaster.

Last night CovCath came ready to play, they doubled down on Wilson, removing him as a factor on the blocks, relagating him to mop up duties.

McGovney, Losey, and Jackson did what they could, but it wasn't enough. Campbell did go deep on their bench keeping fresh legs in the game, but so did the Colonels. CovCath appeared on a mission, picked up a lot of easy baskets where Campbell had to battle for everything that they got. CovCath had the best player on the floor in CVH, and got the job done.

Bottom line - CovCath at thier best was better than Campbell County at their best.

I also think that everyone playing a zone against Cov Cath for the past month has really prepared them.

Let me qualify my following reply with this. Camels had a nice year and won the 10th region tourney. They represented themselves and the Camel community as you would hope your boys would. They did everything they were capable of doing and , in the end, that's all you can really ask so hats off to them.

With that said, they simply are at a lower level than many teams in the 9th this year. Yesterday was not a surprise to me. There's nothing on the resume this year for the Camels to have one think that they were a legit threat to the Colonels yesterday. I'd say the same thing had many other 9 region teams were at Rupp instead of the Colonels.

You say they lacked the intensity they had the last few games. I'd say it wasn't intensity. I'd say it was the fact they played much lesser teams.

Again, this is not a personal attack of any member of the Camel team or staff.

Sometimes it's just good to state the facts.

To the first bolded statement--Who said this in the prediction thread?

"When you have two players like Matt and Dre you're going to be in games. Add in some other role players and it will most likely be a good matchup."

To the second bolded statement-- You brought up some great points about who they really beat coming down the home stretch.

"I think even Camels fans can understand that if all anyone has to go by is who the Camels played (vs actually watching them) then it's easy to have a jaundiced view when we read how much better the Camels are playing. We're handicapped by not seeing them.

Their recent schedule:

Fleming County 12-18

Grant County 16-15

SK (lost) 15-14

Cooper 18-9

Boone (lost) 20-12

Ryle 6-23

Brossart 14-12

Scott 18-14

Bourbon Co 9-20

Pendleton Co 15-17

Scott

The game that would interest me most if I were the Colonel staff would be the loss to Boone. The rest don't really tell me a lot"

Proof in the pudding it's hard to make predictions when you don't see both teams prior to the matchup. Plus add in the fact you are dealing with High School aged boys.

I did say that. Probably caught me at a moment of trying to be nice and say it could be a game. Hey, sometimes I may not be blunt.

I was out of town and thought about cutting my trip a day short to make it back. In the end, I didn't because I just didn't think it would be a close game.

The other point I made that you mentioned was 100% factual. It's hard to say you're "clicking" when it's against teams they played to end the year.

First of all the Camels don't decide which region they get to play in. I don't agree that they are " on a lower level than many of the 9th region teams". They beat Dixie (who beat CovCath) and beat several other 9th Region teams that CovCath struggled with during the tournament. I get what you're trying to say as Campbell didn't play NewCath, Holmes, etc and perhaps they could have played some other top ranked teams from around the state. But "rankings" don't mean anything to me (see NewCath and Mason Co.). I don't think you would consider Newport a "top level" team in the 9th Region, yet they were a free throw away from putting CovCath into baseball season. When it comes down to it, you gotta play who you gotta play and you have to play your best to beat the other team on the floor that night. Anything can happen on any given night. Campbell County didn't play well and CovCath did. I just don't agree that Campbell is on a lower level than most other 9th Region teams. JMO.

I didn't expect everyone to agree so no harm there. Beating Dixie in November is not beating Dixie in Feb/March.

We agree that anything can happen and it almost (should have) for Newport against CCH.

Lastly, I didn't say "most 9th region teams." Many is not most. Many is about 5 or 6.

I would be curious as to which 5 or 6 teams ....?

CCH/Holmes/NCC/Dixie/Boone/Cooper

St Henry is a "on some nights."

Fair enough.

Lost to CCH twice. Lost to Boone at Boone. Did not play Holmes or NewCath. Beat Dixie, Cooper, and St Henry at St Henry.

They have played CovCath twice and lost by 20ish twice, I'll leave the hypotheticals to everyone else.

Since it was stated 5-6 teams, was wondering which others BESIDES CCH in Clyde's opinion. Yes CCH is the BEST IN THE 9th Region.

I wasn't intending on stopping the flow of conversation between you and Clyde, I just find hypothetical debates to be mind-numbing. Not towards you or him, just in general. Sorry, I was more so thinking out loud. :D

Then take my advice and STAY AWAY from the All A threads. Talk about mind-numbing ....

You'll go mad.
