Dave Bezold Out As NKU's Coach

Featured Replies

I wonder how Drew McDonald views this coaching change? I know some kids pick the school and other kids pick the coach. I know Drew liked the school, coach and the opportunity to play golf. Perfect fit for him. The coach is the one who offers the one year renewable scholarship. Does the new coach have to honor the current offer? I think the kid has the option to opt out with a change?

Could the offer to CVH be taken back since he has not committed?

If a player signs the NLI the school can release them and in most instances where there is a coaching change most schools will release if requested.

NLI states that the student athlete is committing to the school and not to the coach in pretty plain language.

New coach does not have to honor any offers made to potential student athletes who have not signed an NLI. For that matter the new staff would now be in charge of reviewing current student athletes and would be in charge of decision to renew those.

Slippery slope on the recruiting trail if the new staff comes in and cleans house but this is their one opportunity to start from ground zero on building their roster.

A) No, kids get let out of NLI's after a coaching change all the time. That said, the new coach may love Drew and what he brings to the table. Time will tell.

B) Sure, offers get rescinded all of the time before ink on an NLI, and honestly, and I don't mean this in any other way than matter-of-factly, I can't imagine Cole is too worried about whether or not he has an NKU offer. I'm also fairly certain that two of the potential HC's in the mix both LOVE Cole, so I think if interesting they'd turn up the heat, not douse it.

NKU needs to recruit locally to get people to come to the games though. Just think they could have the following kids play their.

Ruthsatz

Hatton

Bolden

Zack Tobler

Antonio Campbell

Henderson

Richardo Johnson

Elijah Pittman

Geislers bring a nice crowd with them to the games, but really how many more people will show up on a consistent basis (season tickets) just to watch a couple of local kids? You need to win and win at a high level. Too much interest already in high school sports, major D1 local schools such as UK, UC, X, along with their kids multiple activities to jump on another band wagon.

I'm a huge fan of Drew McDonald and his game and a hope this all works out well for him, but I couldn't believe when NKU gave him the OK to do 2 sports. With the time required for college sports and academics, I can't imagine that many head D1 coaches are going to like splitting time with another sport.

Kids do it. He might find you're right and give up one of the two.

I haven't seen Drew play golf but have heard he is very good, maybe even good enough to make money from it some day. I can't imagine being able to lift weights in the morning for basketball and playing good golf in the afternoon.
