Commissioner Rob Manfred: Pete Rose Submitted Request To Be Reinstated To Baseball

 

 

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Pete Rose has submitted a new request to be reinstated to baseball.

Rose agreed to the lifetime ban in August 1989 following an investigation for Major League Baseball by lawyer John Dowd that concluded the career hits leader bet on the Reds while managing the team. Rose applied for reinstatement in September 1997 and met in November 2002 with Commissioner Bud Selig, who never ruled on the application.

Rob Manfred, who succeeded Selig in January, said Monday that he has received a formal request from Rose.

Good for Pete, this way it can be denied and we can be done with this.

Judging by Dan Patrick interview that Manfred gave, I don't think Pete's fortunes are changing with new commissioner.

No way he gets reinstated. Someday when he's dead and gone, they will finally allow him a place in the HOF.

 

Smartest thing Pete can do right now though is to keep his mouth shut. Learn to say "no comment". He won't though.

Pete will pass away before the Cubs win a World Series. They will wait til after he passes to put him in the HOF, so as to not give him the satisfaction and that's a shame.

Pete's all over the hall of fame, he just doesn't have a plaque hanging on a wall. His records are noted, and there are jerseys, pictures and other memorabilia in exhibits. He might be "banned" but he's still recognized and the HOF is still using him. Which is why I think they should just "let" him in.

I just wish there was some middle ground here. I understand what he did as a manager, and it was wrong, and it's within their prerogative to ban him. However, you also can't deny what he did on the field, as a player, either. And, as rjs stated, the HOF has him all over the place anyway. So why can't they put him in as a player, and still ban him from baseball as a manager?

Commissioner Manfred already approved Rose's participation in the official MLB All-Star Game festivities. I don't know that anyone has publicly said what Rose's role(s) will be, but I'm sure they have been specifically discussed behind closed doors and Manfred is well aware.

 

A lot of people are conjecturing that Pete chose to submit his request when he did since 1) Manfred is already showing a bit more leeway that Giamatti and Selig ever did by allowing him to participate in the All-Star Game goings on, and 2) in hopes that his participation in the All-Star Game and the anticipated home-crowd outpouring of Pete Rose fawning might help sway Mafred even moreso.

This isn't the first time he has submitted a request for reinstatement. Last time was in 1997, I believe. Bud never acted on it or spoke of it.
