Holy Cross Batman! Keep it rolling!

Etown was everything they were advertised to be. Loaded with talent. HC held a team AVERAGING 70 points per game to 40...outstanding.

 

It could have been worse. Turner had several shots, including some 3s, that went halfway down then out. And I'll contend the go ahead play by Etown was a horrendous call. All in all, a tremendous accomplishment by the Crossbacks.

 

Now, seize the opportunity, and grab that brass ring!

Covington Holy Cross upsets No. 1 E'town on Turner's shot

 

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — For anyone who thought it inevitable that talent-loaded Elizabethtown High would leave this weekend with the state championship trophy in tow, Deja Turner made the definitive rebuttal on Friday afternoon.

 

Covington Holy Cross’ senior guard drove and connected on a baseline runner with four seconds left to lift the No. 4 Indians over No. 1 and heavy tournament favorite Elizabethtown 41-40 in a stunning quarterfinal of the Houchens Industries/KHSAA Girls Sweet 16 at E.A. Diddle Arena.

 

“What I told our kids (Thursday) night was, E’town is being made out to be Goliath,” Holy Cross coach Kes Murphy said. “Everybody put them in the championship, and I don’t think people even saw us as David’s little sister. … But we know who we are and what we are all about and know that if we work hard, believe and have each other’s back, we can play with anybody.”

 

Turner, a Wright State recruit, made only 7 of 21 shots but finished with 23 points for the Indians, who will play Male 7:30 p.m. EDT Saturday in Holy Cross’ first-ever state semifinal. In its season of increasingly remarkable accomplishments, the Ninth Region champs have now won 20 in a row and remain alive to claim both the small-school All “A” Classic state title and the overall state title.

 

After stopping Bell County’s 21-game winning streak in Wednesday’s first round, they ended E’town’s 21-game winning streak on Friday. Holy Cross (31-3) is the only Kentucky team to beat the Panthers (32-3), last year’s state runners-up who have four players signed or verbally committed to NCAA Division I colleges.

I feel your pain...I really do. That's a game Etown wins 9 out of 10 times. Unfortunately, the one time happened today.

 

I'm not connected with either team. Just my observation of what I saw. Yes..Etown missed some shots. I thought the two 3s by Turner that went in and out earlier would have effectively ended the game. And the call against Turner to give Etown the lead was a bad call.

 

A brutally difficult loss for Etown..truly a great team. It was a fantastic season with a unfortunately painful ending.

justsayin, I don't see Etown winning 9-10. Maybe a split would be fair to say. As said before on here, it was a matchup nightmare for Etown. HC has length, and steady guard play and play well at a snails pace. And BTW, no pain here, as the only pain I will have is if Duke comes back against Notre Dame.

But let’s take a breath for a second. While this was definitely an upset, it wasn’t the equivalent of a No. 16 seed knocking off a 1-seed in the NCAA. Holy Cross has had an outstanding year all year, from its very first game when it went to a running clock against Assumption in Louisville in the third quarter (58-23 with half of A’s points coming in closing minute against scrubs).

 

This year, Holy Cross:

 

1 – … is 10-0 against top 20 teams in the last Litkenhous ratings, and 12-0 if you include No. 21 Sacred Heart.

 

2 – … is 31-3 with ALL three losses coming with multiple starters and others hurt, sick and missing.

 

3 – … won the All A Classic by beating (then) 17-4 Danville, 21-3 Clinton County, 16-6 Owensboro Catholic and 22-2 Murray in five days.

 

5 – …finished 3rd in the Roncalli Lady Rebel Tournament in Indianapolis, beating Oregon-Davis (Indiana A semi-finalist) by 9 and losing to nationally ranked Lawrence North (4A semi-finalist) but giving them all they could handle for 3 quarters. HC was WITHOUT Deja Turner and Dajah McClendon. Lawrence North has four D-1 commits also.

 

6 – … finished 3-1 in the Lexington Traditional Bank Classic at LexCath, beating Lincoln County, Sacred Heart and Allen County-Scottsville but losing to East Carter without Deja Turner for most of the tournament and with Dajah M. playing hurt and with multiple girls sick.

 

7 – … beat Holmes (No. 3 in the last Litkenhous ratings) THREE times, twice on their home court. Holmes was 30-0 against everyone else.

 

And the defense? HC held 65.9 ppg E-town to 40, but that's not unusual. It holds teams to 38 a game.

 

Bell County averaged 65.6. Against HC, 33.

 

Holmes averaged 68.5. Against HC in three games: 40.

 

No. 9 Highlands averaged 62. Against HC in two games: 35.5

 

Murray, 64.6 a game and 46 against HC.

 

Danville, 67.9 and 35 against HC.

 

Sacred Heart, 56.5 and 38.5 against HC in two games.

In another thread I pointed out that East Carter was missing their tallest player (was it Brainard?) and said that Holy Cross' lead disappeared when "Mayo and Hall put on a shooting clinic (six 3-pointers and 18-20 from the line)."
