I hope Williamsburg the best at Rupp, but in all honesty just don't see them being able to compete at that level. They did beat a good Clay team but that is their only quality win the whole season. Once again good luck to the Burg I hope they win it all.

Great game and atmosphere. There is no way they could have had this game in a high school gym. Congrats to Williamsburg. Good luck next week.

No offense, but I have a hard time seeing Williamsburg beating Corbin, Knox Central, and Clay County in succession if you gave Clay County Williamsburg's spot in the bracket. They were the better team last night, but Clay County was playing with House and Sexton pretty beaten up. Both of those kids were playing pretty hurt from what I understand.

 

Again, congratulations to Williamsburg, they were the better team last night.

 

As far as taking a team at State to do well, I'd take Clay County. They were there the past two years and wouldn't be shell-shocked by Rupp and the atmosphere. Williamsburg may not be either, but you know for a fact that Clay County wouldn't be.

This group of Seniors has played in two state football finals against Mayfield, they will not be shell shocked playing in Rupp...

This year Wburg beat Corbin 4 times, South Laurel 3 out of 4 times....I watched Clay Co play twice this year and I thought South Laurel was better...Wburg had the best team and talent in the 13th, no question...

They beat South Laurel and Corbin back to back in the district and frankly South Laurel was better than Corbin, plus they beat Clay pretty convincingly. Williamsburg went 4-0 against Corbin this year. Clay made one run the entire game where they out did Williamsburg. Spot in the bracket had absolutely nothing to do with it. Not to mention just last week Barbourville beat Knox Central.

 

Just because Corbin and Knox Central are the "name brands" of the 13th region doesn't mean they were better this year.

 

 

Clay Co was playing their third game in four days. Williamsburg was playing their third game in six days. Pretty big difference there, especially when you have two kids in Sexton and House that were playing through some nagging injuries, in Sexton's case, one that really limited him.

 

Also, no way that I'd rather play Corbin and Knox Central than South Laurel and Barbourville, plus have those two extra days of rest. I know those are good teams and that it's closer than people think, but Corbin and Coach P in tournament play, in their backyard no less, and in the Clay County game, that's just going to be a war. No two ways to slice that. When you have 23 total team fouls called in a half and it's not even over, and the game is being called by 11th Region officials, you know it's a war. Clay County/Corbin is just a different animal and you throw their records out when they play. They are going to be out for blood. Speaking as far as Clay County's draw, I wanted no part of Corbin in the first round.

 

Knox Central is the only team to beat Clay County this year and the one that most people would have thought would be the one to win if Clay County didn't. Williamsburg would have been the third. I don't think you could have drawn up a worse scenario for Clay County in terms of the bracket, and I'll stand by that.

I 100 % agree joker. Clay couldn't have played any worse in this tournament and still had a shot at winning. You can debate all you want about who has the better team. It's Clay IMO and it's not close. But the burg did what they had to do to win and congrats to them. 2 of clays starters had to have injections just to be able to get on the court.

Williamsburg beat 2nd or 3rd best team in the region first round of the district. Then Corbin in the finals. What was clays district like? I'm not whining. If you want facts, here, I'll state a few.

 

Facts like, oh, Clay County's district prepared them well enough to beat Williamsburg by 40 at region last season, but that's not really being brought up in calling this year's Williamsburg win an upset (whoops, until now).

 

Facts like, oh, Williamsburg is making their fourth trip in school history to the Sweet 16, but Clay County has made four trips to the State semis since the 80's and would have been making their 4th trip to the Sweet 16 since 2000 had they won. That hasn't stopped Williamsburg fans from talking about how bad the 6th Region would have blown the doors off Clay County, the team who only lost to the State Champs by 3 in the opening round last year. That hasn't stopped Williamsburg fans who haven't seen their team in Rupp in over 60 years, definitively state that Clay County couldn't have played the 6th closer.

 

 

The same arguments I made about Corbin and all that? What? Really? How many times have Clay County and Corbin played where the winner either goes to State, is the favorite to go to State for the rest of the tournament, both teams have been rated #1 and #2 in the region, or both teams were in the Top 25 in the State? Count that and compare it to the same you'd say by substituting Williamsburg for Clay County.

 

To act like the rivalry between Williamsburg and Corbin is near that of Clay County and Corbin, well... I'll just say there are probably more people who take note of the latter game, more coaches in the stands with clipboards. That's because those are the old guard, the tradition they have, and what it usually means for the rest of the teams trying to get past them. With Williamsburg and Corbin, it's an inter-county rivalry, so yea... I'm sure it's intense at time. But I think if you ask Corbin fans, they'll tell you which game is more important to them.

 

 

Congrats to Williamsburg, enjoy the week and this trip. You've earned. No one can take it from you. My personal advice to my fellow 13th Region counterparts in the Burg though: just be careful not to get a big head and be too nouveau riche with all this. Playing outside of the 13th is a different game, especially when there's athleticism on the other side too. The Danville game shows that, and it's not gonna be Danville they're facing in a week. If I wanted to spin, I'd be talking about how Doss or DeSales was probably hoping for Williamsburg instead of Clay County. When you've been there before, you congratulate the teams you've beaten to do it, not down them though, and I wouldn't be saying that had Clay County won even if most were thinking it.

 

Again, congratulations to Williamsburg, enjoy the trip to Rupp, this team and their athletes are one that will go down in history for what they've done in both football and basketball. You beat Clay County when it counted, so hats off to you. Just don't go overboard with the celebration or bash Clay County's kids too hard because they were pretty gracious in defeat and have honestly handled it all WAY better than we have as fans, myself included. Despite that, I know I'll be all for seeing Williamsburg do well and represent the 13th, and I think most Clay County fans still feel that way so long as it doesn't turn into a peeing contest where we're putting tons of emphasis on one single game.

Three in four is a big deal when you have the haul back to Manchester factored in and you are playing with two kids, one of which is your senior heart and soul and lockdown defender, playing banged up pretty badly. I don't know if the extra two days makes a difference in the final outcome and we'll really never know, but I don't see how it could have hurt Clay County at all. Two extra days on the training table and with rest, ice, compression, elevation is different from banging with Corbin on Friday, then coming back and banging with Knox Central on Saturday. That's the point I was trying to make there.

This Wburg team has several players that helped lead the football team to two state championship games in football. They have the hearts and the drive of champions. I hope they have a good showing at Rupp.

Williamsburg deserves all the credit they are getting but I have a question, how many of "good" players on the football and basketball teams were held back in the 8th grade?

They were 6th grade hold backs, Williamsburg had a policy that did not allow kids to hold back in the 8th grade

If you are about facts maybe you should recalculate. Clay didn't beat wburg by 40 last year. That is all I will post because obviously your love for your team has messed up your math skills.
