dallaslaredo Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 First, it's girls basketball - so I don't know if any window ever closes. That said, Reg final 3 years ago, and now 2 reg semi exits in a row. Sure, everyone will take that season - but I think with their talent and recent success the feeling was this year would be the one to win the region. Now, it's down to one last season to get it done for a talented group next year. I'll pick them to win it next year in a 9th that's down from this year, but my confidence was higher this year.
se7ens Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Window won't shut. By the time this junior class graduates, there will be a very very talented class as sophomores (lead by Barth among others, including the younger Coffey) who will be in position to keep the success sustained. I'm sure RCC will back me there.

Mixed with all the other kids that are good and will develop in the high school program...it just starts over. But there are always other good players and teams out there too.
Basketball55 Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Highlands has too good of facilities, other than the basketball gym, to fall off the map. This athletic program will never be down for a long period of time. Down for Highlands is successful for anyone else. The girls will be fine because they have some very knowledgeable coaches who push them to be their best.

In about 3 or 4 months you will not even be able to rag on the gym since it is being completely redone. Some things being said in here that bother me are the fact that someone is always looking down the ladder and talking up who is coming through the pipeline. Maybe if the focus became the older kids and the younger ones "earned their stripes" we would not have these disappointments as Malachi pointed out in another thread. This team has a very solid nucleus returning next year in Adler, Coffey and Leigh. Question is who in the program will step up and be that 4th,5th,6th, 7th and/or 8th man and not who will be there 2 years from now.
Panther15 Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 With what Highlands returns next year it will be Holmes right behind Them will be Highlands then it's a toss up from there that's how it is shaping out if it doesn't happen for the Bluebirds next year then the players aren't the issue its above them.

I believe Holmes started 5 underclassmen last night, so how is Holmes now behind Highlands? Also, I believe a very talented Ryle team is returning their top 8 players. If they can right their ship, they may have something to say about it. I'm just not ready to place Highlands as the preseason favorite for 2015-2016.

RandyWatson Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 i stated Highlands will be behind Holmes? A period or 3 may have helped. My mistake.
kings102876 Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 I believe Highlands, Holmes, and Ryle will be your top teams in the 9th. I wouldn't sleep on Conner. If they are not making a run at the 9th next year then it will be in 2016. They have a very talented pool of players but they are young.
malachicrunch Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 Window wont close for Highlands. They may be up and down a litttle due to the constant promotion of younger players. They have had plenty of season where they win tons of games and are ranked at the top of the region. The downfall is play in March. They need to figure that out.
Imthesmart1 Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 So was this years team a bunch of young kids? If so, why would the window close?

I agree, seems common on this site to talk about "whats coming", as I been reading threads on this site for a few years without commenting. It rarely works out the way you think it will, but makes for a thread filler.
RCC9 Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 So was this years team a bunch of young kids? If so, why would the window close? This year's top 7 consisted of 2 seniors, 3 juniors a soph and 8th grader. I think the question (and I may be wrong) is does it dry up after the JR class leaves. The answer is no because by that time, the current 8th grade class (that is very good) will have infiltrated the system and would be Sophs. Along with this year's soph and the other 8th grader that has played varsity since 6th grade and a few other really good players that are scattered within the other classes, they will rebuild and have another core on the way. They may have one year in there somewhere that is a little less competitive than some of the other years, but they will still be competitive. Anyone thinking that HHS doesn't have success because they bring up young kids is crazy. Every school does it and you have to to be competitive with the other schools. There just aren't very many numbers. Sports have become specialized and the days of kids playing all sports are gone. Except at NCC and still don't know how they do it! But I have a feeling it had a lot to do with their senior class being great all-around athletes.

It rarely works out the way you think it will, but makes for a thread filler. But I think there was a misunderstanding on what the question was. I think it was directed to, "after this JR class leaves". Well that's two years from now. So to answer the question, you do have to go with what's coming up to replace kids two years from now. Or at least that's how I understood the question.
