There are some difference of opinions on that. My feeling is there is a reason for that, but I won't go there.

 

My feeling and experience is they play the best available players they have in their program. Age is not a decision maker for them and some don't agree with that. Just my opinion.

Ah, so, someone's little Suzy got passed up by a younger player? Got ya it's all coming together. I would hope all coaches played the best players and didn't look at grade level but skill level.

I think that is the perception of some, yes. That in the past, they have chose to develop the younger player rather than Susie. However, what most of those fans don't understand is that younger player was probably spending all their time developing themselves in the off season and making themselves better while the older kids felt entitled to be there because they are older. It happens all the time and at every school...especially these days. If a sport is not your focus sport and it is for someone else...regardless of age, you are going to get passed up. It's life and some can't deal with it.

I think moving players up at a young age hurts them in a lot of ways. Sometimes the player gets comfortable because the already have played varsity early and feel they don't have to work to gett much better. The player also knows that they will be starting and don't have to fight for a postion, the coaches create this problem and continue to do it. The Switzer girl form Boone is a very good player and I am not knocking her at all but to me she ha improved her game a little and seeing her as a freshman i would have thought she would average more points as a senior. Coaches don't make players earn aything anymore (some coaches sorry), they label kids early and that's it. what a shame so yes I don't blame some parents for getting upset. Kids who are in high school be the ones to play high school unless your numbers are down in my opinion.

Couldn't agree more. Middle school is a waste of time for good players. Everyone earns their spot in HS. What's the difference if you get beat out by an 8th grader or a Junior? You still got beat out. You are guaranteed nothing. Get better.

If someone gets complacent, then that's their fault. Maybe Schweitzer just doesn't care as much as she once did. Maybe she doesn't want to play bball in college and just wants to have fun. Maybe other kids worked harder than her in those 4 years. For every kid you give me that you feel didn't live up to their expectations, I can give you others that did. McClendan has started since the 7th grade at HC. Turner has started somewhere since 7th. Ware started as a freshman and maybe even lower. Gambrel at Conner started as an 8th grader. Kira Ross at Bellevue started young. Tori Wofford at Ludlow started very young. Adler and Coffey started as 7th and 8th respectfully. What you see is priorities changing in young ladies life. When they are in the 7th and 8th grade, they live for that sport. They don't have all the distractions that high school brings. Also as they get older, their career starts to see it's end. None of them are going to get paid or ever play in front of big crowds and they start to see that. Not that they aren't competitive at heart any longer, they may just switch the extra time they used to spend on bball to other things. (School, boys, partying, college prep, etc) Or they used to take multiple sports very serious and and now are focusing on one. My daughter was a bball gym rat until she fell in love with softball. She played bball year round. Guess what she does year round now...softball. She hasn't played an AAU game in 3 years! So if HHS had enough talent behind her, she would be in jeopardy of getting done to her what she did to others...get her spot taken. She never feels entitled because she's played 4 years already. She does enough to stay sharp and hold down her position because I warned her of the very fact that the same thing could happen to her. Life starts to happen for young ladies and they discover things other than sports. Very few stay on a mission.

Well I think it was starting to dry up anyway. So I do think whoever jumps in that spot is in a tough situation following a legend with not a lot of talent in the pipeline. JMO

What players specifically are you speaking of? Just Swietzer from Boone? She put up some good numbers the year she played with Moss. Is it possible that teams focused on stopping Moss which left her open? Then the following years, more focus was to stop her? That happens a lot. If you have an 8th grader or freshman, leading a team in scoring, most likely they are going to be seeing the opposition's best defender...every game.

I do know there are some really good freshman that played a huge role on their teams this year. All or whom played as 8th graders.

Are you talking about HC or Highlands players?

Okay, what about this. Michala Ware. One of may favorite kids in the state! And I think she is a blast to watch as is! Love her! But we could do the same thing with her. What is she developed a shot? Or was better going left? She would be unguardable! And I mean that! As good as she is, she still does the same thing she's done since grade school. Love her, but that's true.

 

As far as the poor ball handling, I told you what that was. The HHS team probably had one of the lowest turnover avg around. They avg 4 a game for half the season and it did bump to 8-9 by the end. That's pretty darn good. They had 10 total turnovers against Holmes til the last three minutes of the game when they had 5 with 3 starters on the bench and only ended up with 15 to Holmes 18 against us. That's not a knock on Holmes. That's an example that one game of poor (confused) ball handling doesn't set the standard for how good they typically handle the ball. Ball handling was a huge strength of this team. Why do you think HC didn't press or trap them. The same reason no one does. Ask coaches why they don't and they will tell you.
