Covington Catholic 57 Newport 49 (OT)

Does someone want to fill us in on what happened in this game? I was expecting something to jump out on the stat sheet but I see Newport only shot 35%, had more turnovers, and was out rebounded 31-23. How in the heck did they come within a free throw of sending CCH home?

Maybe the hoops gods thought the call was suspect as well. As they say, "ball don't lie".

Tough pill for Mr. Price to swallow. I believe if a FT is short, nerves got the best of you. If you miss long, you just missed it. That last one looked good...just got too much back iron. Keep your head up..."Man in the Arena".

I didn't go the this session because I had a few things to do, but wish I would have. I just didn't think these two games would be close. How wrong I am again. The call at the end was suspect, however, if you are CCH you should not be in that position. They get out to a 10 point lead and as Coach R said in the stories I read they did not go for the juggler. He said they were lucky to get out of there with the win.

It wasn't the refs that caused the tightness of the game, it appears, but the great play of Newport. Kudos to both. It is tough to win in these tourneys, you cannot fall asleep and coast. I believe the Colonels learned a huge lesson yesterday and may put them on a run. I have seen it before where a team escapes one where they were not near their best, wake up and go on a roll. Just fortunate they won.

Other pictures from the game are here:

That is a horrible call. I like to give referees the benefit of the doubt a lot of the time but that was bad.

I was rooting for CCH and was there. However, I also did see some calls down the stretch where Newport had a legitimate gripe. (till puzzled on the two 5 second calls, but I was happy it went CCH way. I thought Snapp was driving to the hoop and "broke" contain and a new 5 second should have been re-set. Maybe Clyde or someone else with ref experience could clarify. It was helter-skelter, haphazard, crazy that last few minutes so the stripes were all over the place.

Rod Snapp coached up his kids and they gave CCH a huge scare. If the kid makes the FT, its over. (2.7 seconds left).

There were some bad calls but I have seen worse. I'm not one to hammer an official.

In hindsight may be the best thing to happen to CCH.

Face it, there are no easy games in this years regional as the first 4 games have attested.

After that quick 10 point lead, CCH was just outplayed by Newport for much of the game really. They seemed befuddled by that zone defense. I thought #20 for Newport was the best player on the floor............smooth, quick, nice jumper. Not sure CCH had anyone capable of guarding him most of the time. Officiating was not good but that's not the reason it was close although that call at the end was as bad as it looks on video. I'd have to agree that those two 5 second calls on Newport were a little harsh as well.

Not sure what you mean by "broke contain" but the 5-second count stays in effect until the ballhandler gets even with the defender.

What D did CCH employ on Snapp? Face guard? Straight up man?

His FGA , even taking into account that he got fouled on some , seems low . Announcers said Newport didn't seem to do a lot to try to free him up.

Really sad.

Doubled and fsce guard. ..I'm sure I'll get bashed by someone for saying this but Covcath has nobody that can defend him sttaight up for a full game. Maybe in spurts but not 4 full quarters. He plays a smart game and knows how to draw fouls.

IMO, he was the best player on the floor yesterday...which says a lot because CVH was really good too.

No bashing Walter but I would pick Cole over Mr. Snapp just due to his ability to get to the hole. Both great talents so really we have to split the hairs pretty thin on this one.

I simply thought Snapp was the best player on the floor YESTERDAY.

Snapp is the better offensive player. I don't think many can argue against that. What separates Cole is he defends so well and his strength getting to the rim. Both have high basketball IQ and play with a toughness that you don't see in many kids.

Would be a lot of fun watching those two on the same team.

Yes, I was searching for the proper words to use so when I used "broke contain" I could not think of a better way to explain. Hence the use of quotes.

It was sort of an out of the ordinary 5 second call because the dribbler was driving, albeit taking his time but was moving forward. He then "broke" towards the lane but by then the call was made. Newport bench didn't really explode, it was more of shock, hands in air type of thing. Not sure if it was towards the officials or E. Snapp.

Thanks for clarifying.
