Rikers Island inmates save prison guard from rape by fellow convict

Featured Replies

A group of inmates rescued a female correction officer who was nearly raped by a hulking prisoner inside a locked vestibule on Rikers Island Saturday night, The Daily News has learned.

The inmates helped responding correction officers frantically tear away Plexiglas on the outside of the bubble-like watch post inside the Anna M. Kross Center at 8:15 p.m., according to multiple sources.

A skinny inmate slipped inside the so-called “A station” bubble through the small crack and opened the security door. A team of inmates then took down the assailant, Raleek Young, 27, until other officers arrived.

Wow and glad to hear the other inmates when to that length to assist the female guard.

Also from the article:

Initially, jail brass labeled the attack a routine “use of force” incident, records show.

That infuriated officers at the facility, who demanded it be labeled a sexual assault.

On Sunday, officers at the facility refused to go to their posts at the start of the 3 p.m. shift, sources said.

Correction Officers Benevolent Association President Norman Seabrook came to the jail and persuaded his members to go back to work after he promised to take up their cause, sources said.

The union president is furious Young wasn’t instantly rearrested and hit with added charges. He claims staff at the Bronx district attorney’s office insisted the matter would be handled after the weekend was over.

“There must be accountability,” Seabrook fumed Monday. “Officers are assaulted every day, and (Bronx DA Robert Johnson) has the audacity to say, ‘Not today, bring him back at another time.’ I will not tolerate it. I will not stand for it.”

Welcome to the word of public service.

Which brings something up that I have said for many years; Women have no place as guards in a men's penitentiary; Men have no place as guards in a women's penitentiary. Point blank.

This times a thousand. The word that comes to mind when thinking of female guards in men's facilities is STUPID.

I agree. You are just asking for trouble.

That logic has to include "women have no place in law enforcement" right?

And if you guys/gals disagree with that, please explain the distinction to me.

Female Peace Officers can use deadly force more easily, can't they? My point being a Female Peace Officer can shoot a suspect if she is in fear for her life. A Female Corrections Officer would have to "Beat" the suspect in to submission or death, seeing how she has no firearm, right? The latter requires more strength and thusly puts MOST females at a disadvantage.

Correct me if I'm wrong anywhere.

Looks like you completely ignored the 2nd part of my post about men not working in womens facilities.

Not at all but good deflection.

Just what we need, any group of police officers using deadly force more easily.

Anyway you cut that one Ram you are making the case for the other side.

If Deadly Force is justified, it would be justified no matter the gender of the Peace Officer, correct? The means of the Deadly Force is my point: shooting or physical.

In my scenario Deadly Force would be justified no matter the gender, just the average female would be better equipped to use said Deadly Force with a firearm over a physical means.

I have a female family member that was a guard in a male prison, she said the prisoners would come at female guards over and over. Either trying to seduce them (thus then being able to blackmail them to smuggle in drugs or other contraband) or intimidate them. Said that they never really let up on female staff.

What a tough job.

I think it's a more dangerous situation to have female guards in daily contact with male prisoners versus being an officer having minimal contact with Joe Blow on the street. Same when that scenario is switched as well. Human nature will always play a part.
