Faiview's Superintendent, Bill Musick Resigns, Again.

Featured Replies

The article appeared in The Independent, but is not available online currently.

Fairview's Superintendent, Bill Musick resigned for the second time in less then two years. Fairview was fined and heavily penalized by the KHSAA for the playing of ineligible player(s) which forced the resignation of Head Coach Nathan McPeek and the demotion of High School Principal, AD and assistant coach Gary McPeek to elementary PE teacher (both left the state following the sanctions). Musick also resigned after the sanctions were handed down by the KHSAA, but later rescinded his resignation and the school board allowed him to continue working, which the KBE said was illegal.

The state also did an investigation at Fairview late last year for speculation of violations of school law, those findings have not be released as of it.

So, all that begs the question: why is Bill Musick resigning now? Is it because the KBE said his taking back his resignation was illegal? Or, was it due the findings of the investigation of the violation of school law? Or, is there another scandal brewing at Fairview that we haven't heard about yet?

I can still remember how

That musick used to make em smile

And I knew if they had a chance

They could could make those people dance

And maybe they'd be happy for a while

But February made me shiver

With every paper that was delivered

Bad news on the doorstep

I couldn't take one more step

I can't remember if I cried

When I read about his sinful pride

Something touched me deep inside

The day the musick died

A little altered

Not a fan. Of Musick. Loved the song.

Musick leaving Fairview

Fairview was penalized with probation, forfeits and a 2013 post-season ban by the Kentucky High School Athletic Association for using an ineligible player, and the state Office of Education Accountability last July investigated the district for alleged school law violations.

Results of that investigation have not been released.

Musick announced his retirement once before, in December 2013, but later had what he called “a change of heart,” and asked the board to decline his resignation, which it did.

The Kentucky Department of Education’s legal counsel said the board could not legally do so.

From what I was told by someone close to this situation, FHS' newly elected board forced his hand into retiring, but this person said he couldn't divulge the reason as to why. I, however, can't confirm if this is true - only that the person telling me is pretty reliable & close to the situation.

Rule #13

Seems like there is a lot brewing in Westwood. I'm not a fan of anything in Westwood after all this has been said and done. A lot of opportunities were taken from other teams in situations like this. However, maybe Fairview will hire someone who can turn things around in the community.

Fairview needed the change anyways. Needed a wiped clean slate.

Plus it wouldn't make sense to keep the main source of the problem there and only get ride of parts of it.

Musick is a snake. Nathan McPeek while I'm sure has some regrets was a fine coach and person as was Chad Tackett what do they both have in common: that's right Bill musick said get out of here. If you aren't from the fairview tree then seems like you are gone. I disagree with you little ram on one thing those kids on those fairview teams earned the right on the field to play for state title. They didn't take anything away from you or other teams because you had a chance like others to beat them. Ineligible player or not didn't have nothing to do with on the field execution. Anyway hope Fairview hires good superintendent and wish them the best.

I would say that the State as well as the KHSAA is ready or close to bringing down their decision on Fairview High School .....,State had found multiple violations on the school system as well as the khsaa still had part of their investigation going on the many dealings with the football program.

One can only speculate what will happen with both ...... Will Fairview be taken over an ran by the State for a period of time , will their be any indictments and/or will Fairview schools be abolished and the district fall into the Boyd County School System ? As for the football program ...will their be any more findings of illegal activity, will their probation period be extended, will their be any new sanctions issued, will the football program be shut down completely ? ................All to be continued.

So, the new season of "As Westwood Turns" begins.

The problem with that (bolded), in jmo is that "those kids" were there illegally, everyone knew that they were there illegally including all the players. Yes, it may be a shame that some innocent "home town" Westwood kids were in that group but with the recruits from WVA, OH., the illegal kids from the Ashland, Boyd and Russell school systems in KY. .....they, although kids knew exactly why they were there. So, although unfortunate that they were used as pawns by adults to make a name for themselves and the school they were not "innocent". Fairview deserved to have all of those wins, district and region titles stripped from them. Actually I believe that the khsaa could have went as far back as 2001, 02 or somewhere around those years when the out/state kids were first brought in and stripped every win, district title the school had during that time. So actually it could have been a lot worse.

Fairview needed the change anyways. Needed a wiped clean slate.

:thumb: I hope that they will get "good" people in their school system, administration and beyond. The citizens of Westwood and their children deserve that.

I would have to agree with oldrambler. Those kids knew what was happening. And no one can say they didn't. It was the majority of the adults fault, however, the kids are at fault as well. I still see tweets and instagram posts from some former Fairview players say, and I quote, "Really wish we wouldn't have taken advantage of the things we did. If we didn't, we could've done it anyways without it". Now, yes, this former player was a "star" but I knew of him and knew he played a great deal of time, more of a role player. He also posted a picture with this from the state title game.

What I mean by saying the took some opportunities away from other teams may have been interpreted wrong. Yes, they beat my team that year fair and square during the 48 minutes between the white lines. However, they took advantage of KHSAA rules and that bother me and anyone else who considers sportsmanship as a priority in high school football. And I say this strongly not because I am picking over throwing a shot out there, but ever since Fairview started the relay line of kids from out of state, their "sportsmanship", from the players and coaches, has gone down to nothing. I am saying, if Fairview didn't do this relay of kids, maybe another team could have competed for that state title.

All I'm saying is, it took away from Fairview's football program-forever. It took away from other teams competing for a state title. And maybe we wouldn't be talking about this today if some adults and kids would do the right things instead of trying to "one up" everyone else. To anyone: Do it right, or don't do it at all.

What a mess. I wouldn't be surprised if the state doesn't take over running the district for a few years, or shut it down completely, depending on what all of this stems from.

If the BOE were to shut them down, does Boyd county have the room to house the extra students? I know Boyd has the new high school and I'm sure it was built to house more students than it currently does, but I have no idea what fairviews total enrollment is. Also, would it be more likely to just shut down the high school and make the middle and elementary school part of BCPS, or would they close them all and bus everyone out in the county?
